free K88 tablet scam
I have been a long time att customer well beyond any contract. I wanted Mexico calling so was thinking of unlocking my phone and getting a sim card when I was on the phone. I got offered an upgrade to mexico calling and a free k88 tablet. I said I didnt want to get anything that added to my monthly bill and the sales person said nothing would be added as long as I didn't turn on mobile data..
Recently I notice they have charged me a $45 activation fee and $10/month. They refuse to take it off the bill. has anyone contacted local attorneys general?

No, they won't take it off the bill and if you try to cancel the data, you will be charged a termination fee. In addition to not telling you about the extra $10/month (that is for data service), they also didn't tell you there was a 2 year contract to keep data service.

Same thing with me; I specifically addressed with the agent that I didn't want to get anything that added to my monthly bill and the sales person said the cost would be what we discussed over the phone. This is a total scam.

Did you get an email after agreeing to take the tablet? Confirmation and agreements of terms and conditions for the tablet?

This has been their business model for years.
Cell phone companies DO NOT give free or discounted devices without a commitment to cellular service.
AT&T won't even sell you one with payments unless you have monthly service.

like Directv will lower your bill if you get to the 'customer retention'
rep. At the point I got offered this device I was in the process of
unlocking my phone to move to another carrier and the rep held out the
free, no monthly charge tablet as a way to keep me as a customer. There
would never be a charge unless I connected it to mobile data, they said.

I feel like you are disagreeing with me, but it seems like they did put in you a commitment.
With free/discounted devices, they bill you each month, but if it's on a line that has service, they credit you back the amount.
(I'm sure someone will come up with a very rare example of a case where it happened, but it's going to be an EXTREME exception).

This happened to me when I complained of slow internet service, they (online chat person) offered a special "free" upgrade and a free tablet which I said that I didn't want. She insisted there would not be a cost except one time 99 cents. Yea, right. I had connection fee, monthly fees, and It took 6 months of visiting AT&T stores, no help, referred me elsewhere. And calling every phone number I could find, which always led to an automated voice or someone in a foreign country. No help. Finally, I found a phone number which rang in Kentucky, WV, or somewhere in USA. I told the first woman my story, she tried to help but it did take a second or third call, threatening to cancel ALL AT&T services (home phone, TV, internet, and 2 cell phones) to finally get a good person who cancelled the 2 year contract with tablet and gave me a few months credit for my problems. I have kept my cell service with AT&T but I do miss the good ole days when you could speak to local customer service and they cared about our concerns.

Should they have received a contract with conditions and terms?
