Use own BGW-320 Fiber Gateway
I am currently renting the BGW320-505 WiFi fiber gateway (installed by ATT technician when I signed up). I've recently purchased the BGW320-500 from Amazon (for about $170), but when I plug it in it's flashing green light and I have no broadband connection according to web control panel (192.168.1.254).
Do I have to somehow activate the new device and/or just wait for it to finally connect?

I spoke to representative who said it "supposed to just work", and I'll be able to return the ATT modem and stop paying $10 equipment fee, but according to some threads https://forums.att.com/conversations/att-fiber-account/can-i-use-my-own-router-and-modem-with-att-fiber/5df019d7bad5f2f606d6906d?commentId=5e4c5306f6e8ee3d1cd784f2 the fee can't be avoided, and according to other posts in this thread, the new device still needs to be provisioned.
So what's the correct answer?

🤦At&T does not sell those they lease only. So anything you buy from anyone is a non returned lease unit and technically stolen. People that sell them are trying to recoup the money they were charged for a non return fee. Any agent that told you different needs to be fired or retrained Bottom line it won’t work and there’s no way around the 10 dollar fee

Only equipment authorized for your account will work.... if ATT authorized the gateway would expect $99 service call plus still have the $10 per month equipment fee due to having an authorized unit.
Non authorized will not activate on the account. Needs both correct connection (Gpon or Xpon) and ATT Certs to be authorized.
The $99 service call would be to change the ONT associated with account as the 320 has the ONT build into the unit. Cannot hotswap ONTs.

Unless you can return the gateway to Amazon and get a refund, you just bought a $170 paperweight.

My current device is connected via SFP. ONT slot is not used.
Do you mean that even with my own device I'd still be paying $10? That's not what support agents told me, they said, once I return the original ATT router I will no longer be charged $10/mo.
The device from Amazon is an ATT device as well, it even has ATT logos everywhere. Do you mean I still will have to pay $99 fee to set it up?

It's new, in the ATT box, has ATT labels, etc:
Today I spoke to like 6 agents via chat and over the phone, and none of them pointed out what you're saying. Overall, customer support is useless, I wasted couple of hours on that. Here's the piece from chat:
Me : Can I just buy the router from ATT?
Steve : Yes, you can purchase the router from the AT&T.
Me : How much would it be?
Steve : The AT&T router will cost around $75 to $100.
Me : BGW320?
Steve : Yes, you are right.
Me : And I won't pay rent, right?
Steve : Yes, once you purchase the router you do not want to pay.
How come?!

AT&T/Arris does sell routers on amazon. At least last I checked. A few months ago I spotted the BGW-210 sold by both AT&T and third parties on Amazon. I have also asked a technician about it, and they stated it is possible to use it on their network. You just need to speak to corporate.

Produce the link, @julerobb1 , produce the link of a legitimate seller. All the ones I've seen, like the one above, have a seller of dubious integrity.
A non-AT&T firmware one will not have the 802.1x cert and will not work without it, regardless of how nice you "speak to corporate." Corporate has no incentive to make one work that you're not renting, especially given the current legal situation.

What really bothers me here is that there's no way to buy the router, even from AT&T, which forces me to pay extra $10 each month.
I'd rather pay $160 upfront and keep the router infinitely with opportunity to resell later, but I guess that's not what corporate wants ;)
Given how bad the WiFi mesh of BGW320 and AirTies is, the router itself is only needed as passthrough device. Kinda waste of resources... I wonder why AT&T does not provide an option for a cheaper and less sophisticated ONT device, which I can then plug in any kind of mesh WiFi router.

t.Why should it matter what firmware they use, can't att just get rid of 802.1X and allow customers to use thier own RG?
It's bad enough att breaks things with updates, and has unreliable equipment. Even comcast doesn't break things with updates. It s more annoying att made the 320 which is a tri band router , to a dual band router. They removed many features, the least they could do is make this equipment more functional and reliable. And allow users to bypass the RG. No one wants to pay $10 /mo for a piece of hardware that's about as useful as a hammer and a screw, or a car that won't start, it works but it's not effective.n
