No, you'll need to get your friend to completely de-register the booster and clear it from his account and phone number first. Then check at the below link if cell booster can be activated. It checks by ZIP code, no personal info required:

https://www.att.com/support/article/wireless/KM1452148

After it's been confirmed as being off friend's account, give re-registration a try after a day has elapsed... give AT&T registration database some time to catch up with reality.

Then follow activation steps here:

Best of luck to you!

You need to be more specific. Did you purchase a MicroCell (which has been discontinued for service) or did you purchase AT&T's new Cell Booster, which is still a femtocell like the MicroCell was?

Whichever one your purchased, only the original owner can deactivate it. If it's a MicroCell, that doesn't make a difference because they won't work anymore. If it's the Cell Booster, that's a problem.

Get your money back.

Yeah, there are a megaton of the old 3G based,  white and orange, Y shaped microcell boosters for sale that can't be activated for sale on auction sites and e-bay that aren't usable at all.

Only the new "cell booster" devices are usable with LTE capabilities on post 3G devices that work.

They are pure white bricks of plastic. If purchased second hand, original users need to de-register them before selling them on,  otherwise it will not activate primarily if your zip code isn't eligible for booster use or de-registered from primary user account.

To be clear, the MicroCell "tower", even if properly deregistered won't work at all because it is 3G device only. AT&T has shutdown their 3G network and won't allow any 3G devices, like the MicroCell, to even register let alone activate. eBay, and other online resellers should just pull the MicroCell for sale ads from their site because they are nothing more than a "pure white brick of plastic" as @wolfox so eloquently described 😉.

The new "Cell Booster" looks like this and works with modern phone devices:

Anything different likely isn't going to work unless you dished out $700+ on a "Cell Booster Pro"
The old, 3G devices that look like these? Do not work anymore:

@wolfox  I was going to post pics but was too lazy to dig them out of my Tech Guides. Thanks for posting them.

The Cell Booster Pro is basically the same as the Cell Booster, only it supposedly has better range (of which there are lots of reported issues with that), more allowable users, the ability to whitelist certain users (which still doesn't work like it's supposed to), and potentially the ability to firmware update to 5G capability (not sure which "flavor" of 5G it will be).

@kathy5825  As mentioned, that is the new Cell Booster but who ever you purchased that from is going to have to go to their Cell Booster account and de-register the Cell Booster. After they do that, give it a week or so to go thru the system to make sure it clears and then you should be able to re-register and activate it. AT&T can not and will not do that for you.

If you have any issues come back here and in the mean time, you might want to read my Cell Booster Tech Guide, the link is in my sig line.
