3G was supposedly phasing out Feb 22, 2022 but my microcell's been working.....until today, 9/28/22

Hello!

Not being tech savvy, please bear with me! My Cisco AT&T DPH151 Microcell stopped working today, 9/27/22.

I read that AT&T was phasing out their 3G service on 2/22/22 but my Microcell was working fine until today.

Was I just lucky, maybe the phase out didn't reach my area until recently so that's why it's no longer working?

I see there I can buy another Microcell on ebay but it's sounding like there's not point = it's not working

because the 3G service it supports is no longer available.  Is that right??

I live in a canyon and the microcell was a godsent as I work from phone and it's the only thing that helped my phone get at least decent reception. Now it's tough to make/receive calls and it's a BIG problem as my work involves a lot of phone calls. I've read about other boosters but they're all look to be super pricey, $500-1,000+! which I don't want to spend. Wifi calling isn't a great option as our internet signal strength. isn't great (Comcast....don't get me started), seems like there was another reason wifi wasn't ideal but I did research many months back and can't recall!

Any responses/help/guidance would be MUCH appreciated!!

THANK YOU!

I believe AT&T have made new Microcells. They were discontinued but recently brought back with two models covering different amounts of square footage of your home size.

AT&T has a $200 cell booster, which is really just an LTE Microcell.   Final shut off of the last remnants of 3G was supposedly in August so I can't imagine why your device was still working. Wi-Fi calling is still the recommended replacement.

@karkster  It has taken AT&T longer to disable the remaining MicroCells than they had anticipated. In addition to shutting down the service, they also hobbled the MicroCells (basically disabling the 3G radio).

The new versions are the Cell Booster and Cell Booster Pro for about $200 and $600 respectively. They are still femtocells in spite of the misleading name, and they do work, for most people. However, the LTE signal propagation seems to be subject more to interference than the old 3G signal was, so coverage area is really hit and miss.

The Cell Booster was given out for free to existing MicroCell users around the first of the year but that program was fraught with all kinds of issues so not every MicroCell user, with active accounts, received the notifications. The free program ended around March/April so there are no more free units to hand out.

WiFi-C is still the recommended  method for improving poor in-home coverage. WiFi-C is dependent on how robust your WiFi connection is, your phone, and your ISP. I have Comcast and WiFi-C works perfectly. I tested the Cell Booster for AT&T around the first of the year and while it did work, it was not as reliable as WiFi-C so that's why I put it on the shelf and went back to WiFi-C. I only activate it every few months to keep my account active and to receive any updates, if available.

Cell Boosters are the only other alternative (other than switching to another  provider who offers better coverage in your area).

I have two links for Tech Guides in my sig line. One is for the AT&T Cell Booster and the other one is for Cellular Boosters. Both are great primers for either technology.
