Hacked Email

I’ve had my AT&T/Yahoo email account since 2010.

I reset my email password last year. I saved it in my iCloud Keychain, as well as wrote it down.

I tried to log in using that info, I hadn’t reset it since, and it told me it was invalid.

When I tried to get help from AT&T, the only option was to use my security questions. I can’t remember the answer to those, because I set this up as a kid.

When I had to reset my password last year, a representative was able to send a reset link to the email address because I was still logged in on my phone. During this time, I also reset the security questions to be ones I’d know. Clearly the reset didn’t save.

I’m still logged in to the email on my iPhone, both on the Yahoo app and in my iPhone’s mail app.

My biggest fear is that when I tried to log in from Yahoo’s end as opposed to AT&T, the recovery phone number on file was not mine. It didn’t belong to my dad either, who set up the account.

I’m worried that someone hacked my account and now I’m stuck.

I have my employment, college, everything on this email.

I also chatted with my boyfriend who is a software engineer. He told me that the specific care code (205.02) is due to a sync issue where my account isn’t syncing right with AT&T.

We’re reading a lot of reports of others with the same thing happening.

I’m extremely anxious and frustrated with this.

Hello JamzM. We understand how important it is to keep your mailbox secure, especially considering you rely on it for school and work.

The 205 error code is designed to protect your mailbox from hackers and suspicious log in attempts.

AT&T Security is investigating this and blocking IP addresses of those bad actors who make these login attempts. In addition, our internet teams are aware of the problem and working quickly to resolve it.

We recommend resetting your email password to resync your email and to ensure your account stays secure.
Note: For the error code 205.2  you'll have to wait a full  24 hours before resetting your password. Attempting to sign in before the full 24 hours will reset the 24-hour timer.

You can reset your email password by following these steps:

  1. Go to your Sign-in info.
  2. Select Change password.
  3. Enter and save your password info.

Please reach back out if have any additional questions or concerns.

Hi!

I’ve tried to reset my password, but the only option it gives me is to answer my security questions that I don’t know the answers to.

I can provide my state ID, the address I lived at when I created the account, I can probably get the IP address I used to make it if that didn’t change when we switched internet providers to prove it’s me trying to get in to my account.

I am logged in to my email on my phone app, I just don’t understand why I can’t be emailed a reset password link like most companies do.

Hello @JamzM, we will be happy to help with getting past the security questions.

We see you did mention that you are logged in on the app via your phone. We may have some options for you. We do recommend resetting your password.  Even though you don't know your security question answers. You have some other options.

  • One, send the password to your secondary email you defined for your account.
  • Second would be to send the password by mail to your billing address.
  • You can also give the Digital Assistance Center a call at 877-267-2988 to see if they can also assist.

If you are able to get through, we suggest updating your security questions and answers. That option will be the fourth one under frequently asked questions.

Please let us know if this helps!

I don’t have a secondary email on file for that email account, but I plan to add one once I’m back in.

Could I please have a letter sent to my mailing address? I need the password for my email account, which was created at my parent’s house, so it’s a different address than my current address that is associated with my wireless account.

I’ve called them 4 times and they told me they were unable to help.

Hi, JamzM!

Let's move this conversation into a direct message. This way we can check what reset options are available on our end. Be on the lookout for a chat notification in the upper right-hand portion of the page.

Be aware if the email in question does not have a recovery email or number attached to it, we are unable to add that information for you.

We look forward to speaking with you!
