Worst service ever
Ever since I signed up for att it's been (Edited per community guidelines) to start off the salesman at Walmart lied and tricked my wife into signing up promising lower rates than what we were paying with Verizon he promised the balance on our current phones would be taken care of by att. Found out that was a lie. So I said OK then we received the phones my wife's and daughters phones were correct but mine was the phone my wife specifically told him I did not want. Because we were switching services they told me I had to open the incorrect phone just to activate the service until the correct phone is shipped I told them I didn't even want to open phone but for my wife and daughter to use their phone I would have to do this I said OK I eventually got the correct phone. i boxed up the incorrect phone and used the usps label they provided and my wife dropped in Dropbox. Now 4 months later out of the blue they shut my phones off saying we never returned phone. And now they want me to pay for a phone I never ordered never wanted to open I even suggested to drop off the phone until i get the correct one. I shipped it back in the way they asked me to ship back. Yesterday my wife called to try to get this resolved the associate on the phone told my wife they did receive the phone and all I had to do was pay my bill and we were good I made my payment and my wife had a question about one of the other lines we have he transferred us to someone else who could help us with that. Them the next person we spoke to is saying they didn't receive the phone and I can't get the phones back on unless I pay for the phone that I'm 100% sure was dropped off at the posy office I'm right now at my wits end and dont know what else to do

AT&T kiosks in places like Walmart are independent resellers. They are not owned or operated by AT&T nor do they have AT&T employees. They just make the sale and send the info on to AT&T who has no idea of what was said or promised to the customer. Their business practices can be sketchy at times.
File a complaint with the BBB. That goes to AT&T Corporate who will contact you. Just have all of your paperwork and/or documentation on hand when they call. They might be able to help.

The person at Walmart doesn't work for AT&T.
Did you keep your tracking receipt from dropping it off at the post office?

Just to simplify the reason why you are in the mess you are in right now...
You have to at least prove that the package with the phone entered the mail system by having proof of shipment with at&t's label, which you get from handing the package over the counter at the post office and getting a counter receipt.
Without that if there's no proof the phone ever entered the postal system, AT&T has to assume that you kept the phone, and you are responsible for paying it off.
(An Alternative would have been taking the phone to an AT&T corporate store, and returning the phone there. And getting a receipt as proof)
Unless AT&T caves, put it on a credit card. And consider this a very expensive lesson.
You can go to physical store purchase phones and then if there's a problem they go back to that store. Even if they don't have the phone at the time they order you can have it shipped to the store and pick it up. No mail involved no risk of shipping.
Same thing for the trade-in deal and next up early upgrade returns to AT&T, do business in the store - get a receipt. Do your return, your early upgrade, or your trade-in at a store - get a receipt.
