Phone roaming in Sierra Leone, Africa?

My son has an iPhone with unlimited starter plan in the US, tied to my own plan.  Travelling within Sierra Leone, Africa - he seems to be getting automatically signed up for the "International Day Pass" for ATT that is $10/day.  That's fine with me....but he also gets texts from Africell & Orange when entering their networks.  Does the ATT pass include everything he would do within that country?  Or do I still need to worry about separate roaming charges for talk and/or data?    (I looked on my account interface, and it just says the International Day Pass is "on" for his device as an add on (I think) but it doesn't give any details and says billing info isn't instantly available. So I am not sure how much this is costing?)

In Sierra Leone, he's going to roam on the local provider since AT&T doesn't offer service there. However, since the International Day Pass is activated, he will only be charged $10 a day (on days he uses service).

Thank you MicCheck!  That is a great relief.  It seems like the International Day Pass is getting automatically added each day.  Is that the case?  I didn't initaite it, but it shows on his account as an Add-On

You're welcome! IDP is something that can always be active (like you see "on" when you check). When it's "on" you get charged $10, but only when you are in a country that's covered. If he's in the US, it's still active, but it's he won't be charged.

The $10 daily charge is only charged if there is chargeable usage meaning data, a call or a sent text. Once charged, all usage is covered for 24 hours. If your son were to turn his data roaming off to prevent accidental data usage and he didn’t make any calls or send any texts, you won’t get any charges. However, a smart phone will use data if data is left on whether the phone owner is actively using the internet or not. If data is left on you can pretty much guarantee getting the $10 charge every 24 hours.

We'll be happy to further clarify this for you @danjarvis77.

All of the information provided to you by our ACEs is correct; we just wanted to piggyback off that and provide you with additional context.

  • Towards the bottom of this page, you'll find our FAQ about the International Day Pass.
  • If your son uses Data Free TV, advise him to avoid this feature abroad to stop international data charges. Data Free TV isn’t available outside the U.S. so international data charges apply.

If you have any additional questions, please feel free to reach back out. If your son needs to get in touch with us, he can call our international department at +1.314.925.6925 at no charge from his phone. Thank you for reaching out to our AT&T community.
