I received a notice in the mail today, stating I owed AT&T, but I never had service

Hello- I received a notice in the mail today, stating I owed AT&T now, AFNI collections 1405.14$? I have never had an account with AT&T..... What do you propose I do? I am sure it is a scam- but I don’t want to give out personal information to scam artists to prove that I never had an account and they keep/file my personal info?

You can call AT&T and see if they locate an account with your info. If there is, then they can provide you the contact number for any legitimate collection agency it may have been sold to. Otherwise just check your credit report, not something you should avoid doing.

This is a public forum of other customers so we cannot do the research for you.

Collection agencies have been known to contact the wrong people. The collection agency must prove to you that the debt is yours, it’s not your responsibility to prove it’s not. If you’ve never had an account with ATT, that either means they have the wrong person or a fraudulent account was created with your information. You really should check your credit report first, you get a free credit report annually with each agency. If there is something, the next step would be to contact ATT’s global fraud team.

Is the debt on your credit report?

I have no idea? Is that the only way to disprove this? I don’t want to pull up my cc report to disprove a claim that is just a SCAM. Thanks for any help you can provide.

Thanks for all your help. Turns out I was the victim of identity theft/fraud. Every person fromAT&T and the AFNI (collection agency) were extremely helpful and this matter should be resolved shortly....

Thanks again for all the advice.

Why would you not want to pull your credit report? That is your best way to keep an eye on things like this.

You absolutely need to pull your credit reports ASAP! It's possible (even likely) this was not the only fraudulent account set up. If someone stole your information, they could have opened credit cards, taken out personal loans...who knows?
