Final Bill Not Resolved

I cancelled my service with AT&T on September 23rd. The last bill I received was for service through October 17th. I paid the pro rata share but they have yet to credit me back for the balance. I've talked to five different people trying to get this resolved, but nothing has been done yet. Four said they would fix it and the fifth and final one said they wouldn't. So I'm filing a complaint with the FCC. I cancelled AT&T for a lot of reasons, but this just confirms my decision of what a lousy company they are.

The final month of service is not prorated. Once the billing month starts, you are billed for the full month whether you use it or not.*
Apparently, your billing cycle ran 9/16 thru 10/17.
*Exceptions if you live in California, NY or Illinois.

Thanks for that feedback.  It would have been nice if the first (or second, or third, or fourth) AT&T customer service rep with whom I spoke had told me this.  I could have saved about 3 hours in total on the phone.

No argument there. It is surprising how many agents apparently don’t know that. Don’t bother with the FCC complaint, it won’t change anything. The final bill not being pro-rated is in the terms of service. Your new carrier likely does the same thing, all the major carriers do.

If you only paid a pro rata share, then you shouldn't expect a credit back. In fact, you would still owe AT&T money.

@MicCheck I don’t think he meant that’s all he paid. I’m sure he meant he paid the entire bill and is expecting credit back for those days past when he cancelled. How would he even know the pro-rated share to pay since the bill is for the entire month? I would never even attempt to compute that myself.

@sandblaster That might be right. They wouldn't be the first customer to try to pay only the pro-rated amount, if that had happened. People would probably just divide the total by 30 or 31 depending on the length of the month.

After being an ATT customer for over 20 years, I've run into the same issue.

ATT seems to expect to be paid, even though they don't provide the service.
Of course, they prorate your bill on the front end!  And also prorate any service changes made during a month, so they could easily prorate 26 days at $0!!  https://www.att.com/support/article/wireless/KM1051632

I paid off the balance owed on my phone contract ($975) in the store and was told I would receive a bill for the prorated balance of services, which they calculated would be about $85.

After receiving a final bill for $334, of which $130.02 shows as past due, I called ATT and got the same response as above.  "We don't prorate the final bill".  I asked them to show me the contract I signed agreeing to that.  They of course can't, they just refer to terms of service.  Lucky for me, I no longer need their 'service'.

I wrote a dispute letter to ATT, and haven't heard back.  I just received a "Final Notice" in the mail.

Seems we've got a problem here.  ATT bills for services not rendered and I don't pay for services not received.

Looks like the other 47 states need to wake up!

Fortunately, my iPhone was unlocked when I paid the balance on that contract, and I'm able to use it with T-Mobile.

My only regret is that I stayed with ATT so long.  SEE YA!

TERMS OF SERVICE

By activating, using, or paying for any AT&T products or services (“AT&T Service(s)” or “Service(s)”), you agree to be bound by this Consumer Service Agreement (“Agreement”).

Regardless of the reason or whether you or we terminate your AT&T Services:

unless required by applicable law, there is no proration of charges and you are still responsible for the full month’s payment even if your AT&T Services are terminated before the end of a billing cycle;
any Account balance or unused portion for the terminated AT&T Service (such as a prepaid service) will not be refunded or credited back;

@bljoyce The wireless agreement also known as the terms of service is your “contract” which you did agree to. Just FYI, T-Mobile doesn’t prorate the final bill either nor does Verizon. It’s not unique to ATT. That’s pretty much standard across the cellular industry.

I refuse to be BOUND by something that is just WRONG, DISHONEST, and CONFISCATORY, as 3 states apparently agree with.

I have filed several Notice of Disputes.  No response yet.  This really needs a (Edited per community guidelines) (Edited per community guidelines), as it is MUCH worse then someone texting me who doesn't have my permission.

ATT: "Judge, no one prorates!  Everyone does this, so it should be ok.  We can't help that the consumer didn't read the fine print in the agreement that has been updated many times since they started using our service 20+ years ago!"

Judge:  "No, You Do Prorate!   And you can't steal from your customers in CA, NY or IL!"

Now that I know everyone tries to rip off their customers who are tired of getting overcharged, I'll be more careful of my cancel date.

From ATT website explaining prorating of charges.  LOL!   They can do it.  They don't want to.  I could pay it.  I don't want to.
