AT&T requires payment 2weeks before data resets

So my data resets on the 24th of every month yet AT&T requires payment on the 15th. Why do I have to pay my bill 2weeks in advance of my service? What happens if I pay on the 15th but then go over my data before the 24th. Do you go into a grocery store and are required to pay a deposit before you shop? No so Why Do you require payment 2 weeks before?

You are not paying for next month’s data when you pay on the 15th. You are paying for the data you are already using.

Your billing cycle is from the 24th of one month to the 23rd of the next. On August 24, for example, you will be billed for monthly service from August 24 to September 23. That payment will be due around September 15.

Any additional charges incurred after August 24 will be added to the regular bill that's printed on September 24.

You buy service month-to-month, so it doesn't matter what happens after August 24, you are purchasing service until September 23. So you're not paying in advance...AT&T's giving you 3 weeks of service before requiring you to pay! Do you go into the grocery store and they let you take home food for 3 weeks before paying for it?

As an aside, plans with data overage charges haven't been offered in years. If you really have a plan where you'd owe extra if you went over, you should log into your account online and see if one of the current plans is less expensive.
