AT&T is trying to get my husband to pay for a cell phone he never had

We attempted to open a new cable tv account and was told that we had a remaining balance that was an past due charge account for $187. upon review none of the information could be verified other than my husbands name and security number. It appeared that someone opened an account in his name using his personal information. I wonder how that was access? To our avail AT&T customer support nor the fraudulent assistance line was able to or willing to assist us. We were told that if we paid a discounted amount to a collection agency they would remove the charge then we could open up a new account. It makes no sense to ask the customer to pay for an account charge that he never created. Even more frustrating the fraudulent department was no help in reconciling this issue or even providing details as to how and when it was created.

Dispute it with the credit bureau. Since it has been sent to an outside collection agency your husband should have noticed it on his credit report. Regardless, AT&T no longer owns the debt, the collection agency does.

after speaking to multiple people from AT&T we finally found out that the charge was from an iPad that AT&T told him was paid in full after he had completed a two year agreement. He was totally unaware of this charge until he started receiving collections notices. Fast forward r we paid the fee in order to obtain services. But this run around just to get $90 was a complete waste of time Anna resources.
