Restore Cancelled Wireless Account

Hi all,

Decided to switch carriers due to some personal issues with AT&T and was told by a representative that after canceling my service, only then will I be able to transfer my phone number to a new carrier.
Fast forward to today where T-Mobile is telling me that numbers can only be ported from active lines.

My service was voluntarily suspended under the pretense that I needed to do that in order to move my number over. My question is, will I be able to reach out to AT&T, have them restore service to process the port and cancel it again? If so, what will be needed of me? That's been my phone number for the last 10+ years and I'd hate for something like this to mess it up.

This unfortunate situation just solidifies my decision to switch: AT&T's constant miscommunication

Whoever told you that was wrong and clueless. Your service must be active to port a number. Porting the number will cancel that line on ATT. Once you port a number, you don’t need to then cancel unless you have other lines to cancel like watch lines or tablets. So was your service cancelled or suspended? Those are very different. It’s very easy to unsuspend, it’s quite a bit more difficult to restore a cancelled account and could possibly mean you lost your number.

Thanks for giving me an answer. Unfortunately looks like as of August 10th the entire account was canceled. Hoping that since it's only been a few days there's something that AT&T can do, otherwise I'll be raising this issue with BBB
