I got the following email at 10pm.

wireless number 248 is no longer associated with user ID [email scrubbed]. This change may be due to a request you made, or the wireless account may have been closed.

I did not make any requests to at&t and my account was regularly paid. Last payment done 27 days ago.

What's is the reason and how can I get my number back?

The most likely reason is you are using an unsupported phone that needed to be replaced. Apparently May 2 was the deadline for replacing phones that needed to be replaced. You should have been warned but apparently many customers weren’t. The forum is full of similar posts this morning, you aren’t alone. I have no idea how or if you can get your number back. ATT has a big mess to deal with.

I suspect people either didn't keep their email on up-to-date, or ignore the emails when they went out back in March.

More than a few people figure if they have a 4G LTE phone that the 3-g shutdown does not affect them. They don't realize that not every phone is capable of voice calls over the LTE network and had to be replaced.

@formerlyknownas Didn’t ATT also send text notifications?

formerlyknwonas: your comment is not helpful at all.

My email is fine, i received last night's disconnection email but I didn't receive any disconnection notice in advance.

My phone is on ATT's list of compatible devices, but it doesn't matter because it's not an ATT phone an my plan is not linked to any phone.

I spoke with Customer Service back in January and they told me that my prepaid plan was discontinued but I was going to be allowed this plan with my old number and SIM card.

My phone is on ATT's list of compatible devices

Please list your brand and full model number?  Is your phone from a different service provider?

but it doesn't matter because it's not an ATT phone an my plan is not linked to any phone.

Huh? The statement makes absolutely no sense. If AT&T shut you off, it is because the phone you are using does not register in their system as a compatible device.  Of course your plan is linked to a phone, with the SIM card that is inserted into the phone. But if your phone is not compatible AT&T kicked it off.

I spoke with Customer Service back in January and they told me that my prepaid plan was discontinued but I was going to be allowed this plan with my old number and SIM card.

Why else did you speak with customer service in January? Had you been getting notices that your phone needed to be replaced? Had your service been suspended?     It seems apparent you are using a pay-per-use plan. Either you switched off it and wanted to use it again and had to call AT&T support in order to have the plan reinstated.  But the phone never came up?

@GuillermoM

. I never received a notice to upgrade my phone, because I have my own phone,

There have been multiple people who have reported they did receive an email. If you did not have a correct email or an email you had access to connected with your prepaid account, AT&T still would have sent an email oh, it's up to you to keep your information up to date.

I don't have an AT&T phone. I bought and activated the AT&T SIM card with the "bring your own phone" option.

And that is the problem. You have purchased a phone to use on AT& T that is not capable of voice service over its LTE network. This means you have to replace your phone.

So my SIM card is not associated to any phone

Of course it is. It is associated with the incompatible phone that you are using. That's how AT&T knows it's not compatible.

, and not subject to the 3G phaseout but still the number has been disconnected.

Of course it's subject to the 3G shut off.

Unless your phone is capable of making and receiving phone calls over the LTE network, your phone would have to be replaced.

AT&T's rolling shut off of its 3-g network is ongoing.

Hi,

My husband and I both have the prepaid AT&T service and have been receiving a message that 3G phones would be going away effective today.   My phone is 3g and 4gLTE and my AT&T account was closed this morning and I don't have cell service.    My husband had a different phone that was 3G so he went in to upgrade last week to a current phone that would work with the plan before he went on a business trip.  Guess what?   His separate prepaid plan was also deactivated and his compatible cell phone doesn't work.    AT&T just (Edited per community guidelines).   Going back to Google Fi and will never return to this sucky service.

A72 is not capable of voice over LTE service, and you should have replaced it as requested.

You'll have to contact AT&T to replace your phone in order to reactivate service.

Hey there GuillermoM, let's get you the information you need regarding the 3G shutdown.

@formerlyknownas is correct on all points. We’ve phased out our 3G network as of February 22, 2022. We’re making make room for an even better network.

  • Devices Working on ATT Network. It’s important to check the device model numbers to make sure it’s still supported since the 3G network shutdown. This includes iPads, tablets, and wearables.

Talk and data services will only work for AT&T Wireless phones and devices that support at least 4G LTE and HD Voice. Here’s how you can replace your device:

Talk and data services will only work for AT&T PREPAID wireless phones and devices that support at least 4G LTE and HD Voice. Here’s how to upgrade an AT&T PREPAID device:

  1. Visit one of our stores to get a new phone.
  2. Place your SIM card into the new phone. (If your SIM card doesn’t fit, get a new SIM card kit from our store.)
  3. Sign in to your AT&T prepaid account.
  4. Select My Device, then Update Device.
  5. Follow the prompts to update your IMEI or SIM card number.

Please let us know if there is anything else we can assist you with. Thank you for contacting AT&T Community Forums.

Hello ATTHelp

Thank you for your response. My phone is fine and on the list of ATT's compatible devices.

I spoke with a representative in January while unsuccessfully trying to make a call and there was apparently a problem with my discontinued prepaid plan, but I was able to continue using the number and the SIM card.

My guess is that it's not the phone, it's the plan, and that ATT changed its mind, or maybe the January re-activation was only temporary and I have to change plans anyway.

The option to upgrade does not apply to me, because I don't have an ATT phone to upgrade. However, there is an option to change plans, but it takes me to the paygonline.com website which I can't log-in into because I get the "disconnected number" message.

Hello,

My phone stopped working yesterday. The phone says "SIM 1 cannot make calls or access the Internet". I also got an email form [email scrubbed] says:

"The wireless number *** is no longer associated with user ID ***. This change may be due to a request you made, or the wireless account may have been closed.
This user ID was generated automatically for security purposes. To change it, please visit your profile page at att.com/myATTProfile.
To sign in to my AT&T, please continue to use your ID, *** After signing in, you may update your user profile to specify a wireless number you can use as an alternate ID.
We value your business and look forward to serving you.
Thanks for choosing us,
AT&T".

But I did not request the change.

I went to AT&T PrePaid website and tried to log in but says "Error! The account has been disconnected. Please contact Customer Service."

I paid my monthly payment a few days ago and the phone has a message  "Your rate plan renewal was successful" and my bank account is charged by this payment and it worked for a few days until now. Please help me, I even can not call to the customer service because of the phone is disconnected from the network now.

I heard they are not going to support 3G only devices, but my phone (Huawei mate 30 pro) supports 4G LTE they force.

@TPEHAK

That brand is still banned in the United States. If you check the IMEI with T-Mobile even they will not allow you to use it.

Your phone maybe 4G LTE for data, but it is not capable of HD voice, which is voice over the LTE network.

If you received a cheap phone, or were requested to upgrade your phone because it is "3-g" (for voice) , you should have heeded that message and replaced your phone.

Thank you. I'm on the same boat.

Seems that either you buy one of their phones without promising to return your number, or they keep your number and balance.

@GuillermoM

Everyone who acted on time, and well in advance of the 3-g shutdown had the option to purchase a non att phone.  In fact the list of non AT&T phones which should work on the network just fine is quite extensive.

Non carrier branded phones that will work on AT&T

Huawei phones, other than the ones specifically sold by AT&T, are still banned in the United States oh, and no carrier will allow you to use a non carrier-branded Huawei phone.

I paid up on my account a week or two ago and you cancelled my account last night. I can go without a phone for a few days, but I REALLY don't want to lose my number for a variety of reasons. I need help with this, but stores don't open here for another 3 hours. I called as soon as centers opened this morning and was told to pound sand and go to a local store.

We want to help shed some light on what's happening with your AT&T PREPAID account @r1ppy.

Beginning March 1, 2022, we sent cancellation notices informing session-based customers (AT&T PREPAID) that their account will be canceled on or after April 19, 2022, if they have not taken steps to upgrade to a compatible device.

For more information, please visit our support site for the 3G Network Shutdown.

If you are not planning to upgrade your device, and have concerns about the remaining balance/refund on your PREPAID account, please contact us directly for assistance at 611 from your AT&T PREPAID phone or call 800.901.9878 from another phone.

We have a list of AT&T network compatible devices that will work after the 3G sunset.

If your device is not on this list, then we recommend that you upgrade your device to one that is on the list.

Thank you for using the AT&T Community Forums.

I don't have another phone and yes I have concerns with my remaining balance. Furthermore, why was my account suspended? I get the phone may not work but WHY WAS THE ACCOUNT SUSPENDED? That doesn´t make any sense

@GuillermoM

I won't pretend to be an expert on any of this

I think that the reason why people keep asking you what phone you have is that... even though someone at At&t may have informed you back in January that your phone was compatible... there's a good chance that they might have been wrong.

Or that while your phone is on the whitelist... the exact variant of your make and model isn't.

Ex: even though a Samsung Galaxy A71 5G may be on the whitelist... most likely only the At&t branded, or a specific unlocked version... are actually the only ones that At&t will allow to work on the network.

All of the other variants have the built in hardware/software to be compatible (save the primary frequency bands)... but At&t won't allow them to.

Maybe you can get further assistance here if you are willing to provide the exact make and model of your phone.

I just got the same issue. And I have a pretty new and advanced phone (Huawei mate 30 pro) and it supports 4G network, but AT&T disconnected it anyway. I also have not received any notification messages recently from AT&T about that they are going disconnect my phone number.
