Mom travelling overseas, phone is locked. What to do?

Back in April I added my mom to my line on the next program. When purchasing the phone it was explained to the AT&T representitive that my mom would be going over seas for a while and needed a phone to use. He fully understood this and stated that all she would have to do once overseas is purchase a SIM card and the phone would work. Now as you may know the phone locked when my mom went overseas and now I have no contact with her. Your representitive messed up and never mentioned that unless the phone was paid off, the phone would be useless. This is a major problem and Ive been on the phone a number of times trying to fix the problem with the same answer from AT&T which is unless the phone is paid off there's nothing to be done. Well this is your screw up AT&T and that answer is not good enough. I've been waiting a few days now for a call back that was promised to me. I expect this to be rectified and will keep calling until so. I am hesitant to do a future business with AT&T after this issue.

Hi there! @Jm4300 Thanks for posting your concerns.

I’m so sorry to hear you had a negative experience with the representative. If there is still a balance on the Next payment plan, that plan would need to be satisfied prior to an unlock being approved. We do have the AT&T passport that is a low cost international plan that will provide your mom with service. You can visit us online at http://www.att.com/shop/wireless/international/roaming.html to view plan options.

Thanks!

YEs, very poor.  My phone goes to voice mail in 3 rings, or at the end of two rings.  I have tried to get help with this to no avail.  Nobody in customer service knows where to send me, much less how to fix it.  I am paying a lot of money for very poor service.

Don't use AT&T Passport plans overseas. You spend an exorbitant amount of money for a paltry amount of data. The basic plan only provides 120mb which, with a smartphone, is a few hours of system operation.

It is true passport plan give very little data, but if a phone is carrier locked to ATT, the only way to use Text for free and calls for substantially less than international rates, is to add a passport package.

If you know how to control your data use, the passport plans are fine. I just came back from 4 weeks in Australia and did not use the full 120mb.

Every 2 months, ATT.Net refuses my email password.  Their reset failed.  Took one hour and 45 minutes just to get a new password.  This happens every 2 months.

ATT should move to another galaxy.

I'm fed up with this horrible service I've experienced with them for a decade.

I have never experianced the horrid customer service that AT&T has. They could care less as long as they are collecting your money. After my experiance this morning, I am canceling my Direct TV, Cell Phones, U-Verse, and Digital Life. They dont care, all they care about is taking your money and the provide no service at all in exchange. They could care less, so as they say, take your company and stick it................... I am done with AT&T forever.

I am currently going through Fraud and Customer service and getting the run-around with individuals who keep transfering to places that are incorrect. Been on the phone for a total of 5+ hours without any resolution. This is definitely not how a long time customer should be treated. I am considering switching to Verizon or T-Mobile. For paying as much as we do, no one should be put thorugh this pain. Being on hold with a "supervisor" without being checked on for an hour and half is unexceptable. Even when asking where can I issue a complaint it took them 5 minutes to come up with an email that I received a bounce back on. HORRIBLE. For being such a big company, you would think they would be able to fix any of these issues.
