I received my deceased father’s phone that is not paid off.

My father passed away about 5 months ago and I was sent his phone. I have no use for it and am just wanting to sell it. It was not paid off and there is an $800 balance remaining on his account. I contacted support and they said they could not waive the fee. I also took a death certificate into an AT&T store and had the account closed, but the debt still remains. I have no intent to pay it off, so I am just wondering if it is possible for me to sell the phone to someone and would it work with another AT&T account.

Yes you can sell it and yes it should continue to work on ATT or an MVNO that uses ATT but it can never be unlocked. Though ATT could blacklist it for the unpaid debt, they probably won’t since the debt is to a deceased account holder.
