I am an international student, and I’m looking to get a line and trade in my device as well, would I be able to

do it?

Trading in a phone requires a 36-month commitment and your phone will be locked for the full 36 months which means it will not work on another service provider.

I do not recommend that for someone who may be traveling back to their home country for several months out of the year to visit.

You would also have to pass a credit check. That is true with any service provider in the United States.

And if you are going to be calling home, or visiting home and paying AT&T for those services, they're going to cost extra.

My recommendation is that you purchase prepaid service, buy your own phone directly from Apple or Samsung or Google. A phone that will work both in North America and will work if you decide to spend a few weeks at home during break.

I would also recommend you consider other service providers. T-Mobile allows you to roam for free in much of the world. Which means you could purchase and trade in with T-Mobile and still travel home without having to pay extra. And they may have a different policy for unlocking their phones if they are not paid off.
