Adding a LIne on a Grandfathered Unlimited Data Plan

Hi,

I am on the iphone 5s and on a grandfathered unlimited data plan. If I want to add a line to my account, how much will it cost? Is this even possible? The only options I see are mobile share value plans, but none of those are unlimited data. I am planning to upgrade my 5s to the new 6s and want to keep unlimited data, and give my mom my old 5s and add a line for her. I want to know how much will i pay for her phone service, and what will her monthly data costs be?

If you add a line, you must choose from a currently offered plan for that line. You cannot add any lines to grandfathered plans.

You can keep the unlimited for your line but depending on how much data you use, it may be cheaper to switch to the share plan with your mother.

You will have to decided what is the best route for you and your mother.

If your mother is on a plan of her own, her phone line will be $25 (because her phone is out of contract, there is a $15 discount), and data will be around $30 (for 2GB), plus taxes and fees.

Not necessarily true. If the OP already had a grandfathered Family Talk plan, i.e. a plan that already supports multiple lines, then he should be able to add a line to that plan. However, it sounds like the OP just has a grandfathered individual plan.

Thank you both for the clarification. I am indeed on an individual grandfathered nation plan. Sounds like i will be forced to lose my unlimited data and switch to mobile share value to add a line or just keep us as two seperate accounts in order to keep my unlimited data

You don't have to have two individual accounts. There is no problem with having two plans on the same account. You can keep your grandfathered plan and you can add a mobile share plan to your account for the new line.

I have an old plan unlimited multi line and have added new devices to it but as of my purchases of a net gear knighthawk and another phone line and was told yes it will be added to my plan because I have the multi line unlimited plan. But now I'm being told I was given incorrect info and have to have 2 new plans plus the old one. Looks like At&t lost a good customer today Everything I have with at&t including direct TV will be gone today! I can't stand liars because liars will steal from you. No one should have to pay for 3 different plans. They shouldn't be aloud to change a plan you have been happy with for years.

@MADWomen2023 Not sure why you decided to post on an 8 year old thread but you should be able to add the phone line to your plan unless you have hit the line limit. The netgear nighthawk, however, can’t be added to your plan.

@MADWomen2023

Dedicated hotspots are not permitted on any of the unlimited plans. (With the exception of the car connect plan)

That doesn't mean you can't add one to your account, but it's going to appear on a separate plan on the same account. With its own separate limited data plan.

Hi @MADWomen2023, We understand your frustration with being miss informed. This is definitely not the experience we want you to have.

We want to share with you that @formerlyknownas is correct( you canadd new lines or new phone to your plan... However, for your Netgear Nighthawk router you will need AT&T Prepaid data-only plan  which you can set up at your nearest AT&T Store)

We Hope this info helps. If you have any further questions or concerns don't hesitate to reach out.

Thank you for reaching AT&T Community Forums.
