Connecting to HBO Max

Hello,

I live in the country so I have very limited choices for internet services (right now paying $60 for 10mbps but only getting 1-4mbps). So I finally broke down and signed up for DirecTV. But, I'm totally confused about how to get HBO Max and all the other "Special" programs. Do I still need internet connections to see these "free" programs? If so, is it really free to people that don't have internet access? Is it true anything with the word "streaming" in front of it is not using satellite but the internet I no longer have?

HBO Max is a streaming service only. You can not access HBO Max through Directv. You need internet access to stream HBO Max. Yes, anytime you see the word “streaming”, that means you need internet access.

Thank you! I mainly wanted to make this clear for other users that aren't aware of this little knowledge. When I signed up I checked to see if I could get internet services from ATT besides the phone.  Even though it was clear I couldn't watch HBO Max or other streaming programs ATT signed me up for DirecTV as if everything was fine. I knew it wasn't and had to argue with my wife about it - her statement was true "Nowhere on the website or on the pamphlets does it state you need internet to watch these programs". A workaround is to get unlimited data for phones (set phone as a personal hotspot) from ATT and use this as your internet service. To bad ATT doesn't sell "Phone internet box" to give those in the country internet service (all other internet companies really (Edited per community guidelines)). If they had it I would have signed up a few years ago and not mess with the hotspot. Thank you again!

Hello,,

My phone is connected to wi-fi but when I am in the HBO Max App I get a message saying I am not connected to wi-fi.  I check my settings and I am indeed connected to wi-fi and everything else works.  Why does it keep saying No Wi-Fi connection?

Hey there @agrubbs35, we want to help get you connected to HBOMax, so you can enjoy your movies.

We have some steps to take to get you connected to HBOMax on your device. Please try our troubleshooting tool by clicking sign in to start under Fix my Wireless and the help center provided by HBOMax.

Test your connection speed

Here's how to test your connection speed:

  • Android: Download an Internet speed test app from the Google Play Store and test your connection speed.
  • iOS: Download an Internet speed test app from the Apple App Store and test your connection speed.

You need a minimum download speed of 5 Mbps. If videos are buffering, see HBO Max buffers or pauses.

Cellular connection? If you're using a cellular data connection, try connecting to a wireless network to see if the problem still happens.

Please let us know if this helps. Thank you for reaching out to AT&T Community Forums.
