VIP 2250 noises

This has been going on for a long time (over a year or more) but I noticed my Motorola VIP 2250 DVR makes soft click noises constantly. Usually one per second or so. Doesn’t matter if the box is on or off.

Is the hard drive about ready to fail or is this normal? I’ve had it just over 5 years. I don’t have another box to compare it to. I only recently started feeling concerned about it.

Yes if your watching on demand recorded movies. And even if turned off the dvr will still record scheduled programs

I should point out, this does not happen when the other box (A reciever) is turned off. Do the non DVR boxes pull or write data from the VIP 2250 consistently? Thinking if the drive is failing, the other receiver might have worn it out. I don’t use the 2250 very often. Couple times a week at the most, and for occasional DVRing

I turned off the other box and it seems to have stopped. It only happens when the other box is on and playing a channel (Doesn't matter if it's just a channel or if it's using the DVR) or if the box itself is on. Everything otherwise is working just fine.

I had a DVR fail before I got this one. I've had this one since 2016, so I'm pretty weary of it failing and having to go through the replacement process again. The one before it lasted 6 years. They might not be the greatest, but these boxes run better than any TV box I have seen. Very smooth.
