I found old receivers in a box from when I moved several years ago
clearly - I wont get any money back - so can I just pitch them?

They should give you your money back. And if they don't tell them you want to use it seeing how you own it and don't have to pay a monthly fee for it. If they won't I'd contact the FCC or your state attorney general.

According to the TOS, there is no refund for equipment returned after 90 days.

Seeing how he can't return the STB, then allow him to use it on one of his TV's and not pay the monthly STB fee. Seeing how he owns the STB now.
