DVR (VIP2250) Capacity

[Subject edited for better exposure]

I just upgraded my VIP1216 to a (Arris) VIP2250.  If I look at the available space on this new DVR it shows 90% recording space available, up to 380 hours SD remaining, and up to 139 hours HD remaining.  The graphic bar also shows some space being used which I assume corrolates with the 10% being used.

There's no recordings at this point so what's taking the space?  The software?

I believe that the DVR will sometimes show 90% if it reserves space for live TV rewind. Don't qoute me on that though :).

Darknessrise is right.  The DVR reserves 10% for Whole Home DVR functions (such as pause/rewind) for not only the DVR but for any other TV Receivers that are in the home.

Reserving some space for things like such as pause/rewind (live buffering) sounds like a reasonable explaination.

Thanks.
