DVR Size

I was visiting a friend this weekend and noticed how many shows he is able to record on his U-Verse DVR. When I got home, I checked mine and the space remaining was no where near his. Are there different size DVRs? Can I get an upgrade? (I've been a long-long time AT&T customer.)
