replacing dlc battery
I've looked at several videos about this and none show the model controller I have. There are 4 AA type rechargeable batteries in there. I replaced all 4 with 2000 mah 1.2v batteries and the unit still beeps complaining that the battery needs to be replaced.

Good morning Steve,
It sounds like you are replacing the batteries in your Digital Life keypad. The DLC is a much larger device and does not use AA batteries. The batteries in the keypad must be replaced with rechargeable NiMH batteries. The original specs are: 1600mAh 1.2v NiMH. If the batteries you purchased are NiMH batteries, the 400mAh difference should still work.
One important note, it may take up to 12 hours for the DLC to update the new batteries. If the system is still beeping when you receive this message, please contact our Customer Support team at 1-855-288-2727, select option 4, and Digital Life Agent will assist you.

I wouldn't try to replace it with a third party battery as it won't be the same size or there maybe issues with cell/voltage differences, or do you mean to use an external battery pack?
Never let the battery drain too low as bringing the voltage back up takes longer and over time the more you deplete the cells the less charge they will hold especially if you're the type who likes to live dangerously by gaming until your battery is under 10% or until it actually can't provide the voltage needed to power the capacitors.
