If I purchase a phone from someone on an AT&T plan, and they have not yet paid off the device, can I just pop out the AT&T sim and pop in my ST sim and it work?

Hello, I was planning on buying a Samsung Galaxy S5 from Amazon that was for use with AT&T, but was wondering if I placed my Straight Talk SIM card into the phone, if it would work on their networks. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I have requested and received the unlock code; however, my phone does not prompt for the code when I insert the Straight Talk sim card. I can send and receive calls but I have issues with messages. Can anyone help me? Why is it not prompting me to insert the code?
