ATT recently said they would no longer provide updates to my NVG589 gateway. They said it will still work but I will no longer receive security patches and improvements. Does this leave me open to a security breach? Will ATT provide a new gateway that they will support?

I have an Arviss NVG599 modem/router for my internet and want to install a Motorola M2600 router in tandem from the NVG599 WAN line so I can get better internet coverage. What do I need to do to get these two routers working together?

I'm being charged a $10 monthly fee for using the NVG589 supplied to me by AT&T. Could I use my own modem/router purchased locally? If so what would the required spec's be? If not, why?
