Receiver goes bad you lose all of your recordings fyi

Just fyi one of my receivers went bad so I lost all of my recordings and you can't get them back. Do everything you can to save your receiver if you can. Is the Pace 1TB DVR required for 6 HD streams

Or is it just more recording capacity. https://www.att.com/support/article/u-verse-tv/KM1042519/ seems to imply you need the PACE DVR. I have tested our CISCO box and seems to be able to record 6 HD programs so I am saying it is not required, but is there an advantage besides capacity?
