I'm traveling outside the country for 6 months and I want to discontinue ATT wireless. How do I keep the number so I can activate the same number after I return back?

I cannot seem to enable roaming for my prepaid plan. My phone is effectively out of commission. I cannot even receive text messages from my banks, etc. Is it possible to activate roaming with a prepaid plan?
