Software Update Installation Interrupted on Select Samsung Android 5.0 Devices

Summary

AT&T has received reports of some customers experiencing software update installation interruptions/failures when attempting to upgrade to Android 5.1 on select Samsung devices.  The device is still usable but the latest software update cannot be installed.

The following devices are affected:

  • Galaxy Note 4 (N910A)
  • Galaxy S 5 (G900A)
  • Galaxy S6 active (SM-G890A)
  • Galaxy S 5 Mini (SM-G800A)

Resolution

The issue may be related to available storage memory on the device.   If clearing space does not resolve the issue, the device can be updated to the latest version of software at an AT&T DSC or Best Buy Samsung location.

To resolve the issue:

  1. Clear Cached Data
  • Tap Settings > Storage > Cached data > Clear Cached data
  • Try downloading the software update again
  1. Create at least 4 to 7 GB of free storage space
    • Tap Settings > System Tab > Storage > Available Space to check current storage usage
    • Delete Unnecessary files (such as Pictures/Video/Music Files) or take advantage of the AT&T Locker to upload your photos and videos to the cloud.
    • Note: For information on backing up your device, visit com/devicehowto and look for “Backup & Restore” in the topic list
  1. Visit an AT&T Device Support Center or Best Buy location for help updating to the latest software

I cleared the Cached Data on my Galaxy S5, then wiped the Cache Partition and noted I had 6+ Gigabytes of space available.  Then I backed up my data.  I rebooted, and then downloaded the 5.1.1 update.  It installed smoothly, and I saw nothing amiss after rebooting except that the time/weather widget had disappeared from my start page, which I easily replaced.  I finished up by wiping the Cache Partition again, which is something I always do after an update.

Everything appears to be working as it should, and no oddities noted.

This did not work for me (S5, not rooted, running 5.0, successfully OTA'd several previous releases). I deleted cache, moved files (>5 Gb free), and tried about 5 times now on various WiFi networks.

I took it into the BestBuy Samsung Support center (in Santa Rosa, CA). The Samsung rep there has the ability to push an update onto the phone without requiring a factory reset - similar to the OTA update process. However, the 5.1.1 update was not made available to the Samsung Support Center so he was unable to help.

I am stuck now.

If there is something you can do to fix this (apparently so, since several AT&T responses say to call and make an appointment), then can't you publish what to try for those of us that wish to do this ourselves?

I have also tried MULTIPLE times to get this upgrade to work using all the suggestions above to no avail.  Now my options are to go to Best Buy and get Samsung to force the update (they can't because they don't have the 5.1.1 update in their system) or go to one of the few Device Support Centers to get them to do it..  This update (according to AT&T) has many security updates.  So, in order to better secure my phone (because they couldn't adequately secure it in their initial release), I now have to drive to Hollywood on a Saturday to get AT&T to do what they should be able to do OTA?  Are they going to pay for my gas and parking? (It's Hollywood.  You always have to pay for parking).  If AT&T truly cares about its customers, they would have patched this issue RIGHT AWAY.  Is there a way to download the update to my computer and use Kies to update?  I find it distressing that not only is AT&T the LAST carrier to roll out updates for Samsung's flagship devices, they can't even do it effectively.  At this point, once my contract is up, I'm gone.

Unfortunately, the latest update available for the G900A via Kies is KitKat 4.4.2.

Oh, the AT&T store is of no help.

I tried one in San Marcos CA and they had no ability to flash or load 5.1.1 onto my device.

And while I was at Best Buy in Santa Rosa, CA, learning that they could not get access to the 5.1.1 file, there were several people who were sent to Best Buy from the AT&T store.

What a mess.

Smart Switch is of no help -- it did not have access to any new updates for me (I had 5.0 already and that was all). I also tried doing the update in Safe Mode -- same problem exactly.

easy way to load it seems to make sure you have 5+ gigs of memory.  Heck if you want it really band factory reset the phone.
