Not receiving texts from Greece on Samsung, but just fine on Apple.

So it's all in the family; we all have phones from AT&T - my wife and daughter have iPhone XR, my son and I have Samsung S20.

My daughter moved to Greece; we unlocked her phone and got a SIM from a company there for the few months she'll be there. Her phone is working just fine, it seems; when she sends a text to my wife (iPhone), my wife receives it just fine. When she sends a text to me or my son (S20), we do NOT get it. She does receive our texts, but when she responds we get nothing.

Yes, we've resorted to WhatsApp, but that's a pretty poor answer, no reason text messaging shouldn't work. For the record, I do receive international text messages from other people without any problems.

Is it possible she is sending iMessage to an Apple ID previously used by you and your son?

I have a friend who moved to Florida after purchasing his first smartphone and he was sending messages to my Apple ID and I was not getting them. He assumed that they would go through to my phone, but I use Android. They were going to my iPad and sitting in messages unnoticed because I do not use iMessage.  He now emails or sends regular text.

IDK, I'm not familiar with iMessage - I've never used it, nor has my son, AFAIK. I've never had an Apple ID.

We understand how important it is to be able to receive messages while abroad, we are here to help fredjh67!

Thank you formerlyknownas for helping.

iPhone users will still be able to send/receive messages when cellular/Wi-Fi is turned on. Please let us know if you have an international add-on while at Greece as this is needed to stay connected while abroad, feel free to explore our international services that we offer.

We also recommend turning on international roaming to allow the device to attach to foreign wireless network signals when available.

Let us know if this helps! Thank you for posting on the AT&T Forums!

Rhoda, are you bot, or did you just completely not read what I wrote?

Guessing bot looking for keywords. It's just completely not the problem.

🤦🏼‍♀️ Rhoda didn't read.

If the problem isn't imessage, then it may be that your daughter is not using the proper 10-digit phone number to send texts , so only iMessage works.

She has to add +1 to your 10 digit number.

She should also make sure that the her Greek service provider allows her to send text messages for free.  At&t does, but her Greek carrier may not.

Thanks for the reply. We've already double checked that she's got the +1 in front of my number. Since my wife receives messages (iPhone to iPhone), but I don't (iPhone to Samsung/Android), I think the problem somehow lies there.

I mean, keep in mind it works just fine with the AT&T SIM in her phone, so I feel like it must have had something to do with with the switch, obviously. But that my wife gets messages and neither me nor my son do is baffling.

She can send you text messages via the AT&T SIM card and Wi-Fi calling at no cost, but that's an annoying work around.

She should contact her Greek carrier.  My assumption is that  messages are going through as iMessage, which is data, to her mother. But  SMS are not going through.

Sorry, I know that's not much help. Unfortunately there's only so much we can suggest when it's not AT&T.

Thank you for the response, @fredjh67.

We want to further investigate what is causing you to not receive text messages to your Samsung device from your daughters iPhone. We understand how important it is to stay in contact with your daughter while she is in Greece! With that being said, let's meet in a DM. You will find the chat icon next to the bell icon in the upper right corner of this page. Our next message will appear there.

Thank you for contacting AT&T Community Forums. We look forward to chatting with you soon!
