Bought an unlocked phone

Bought a new/used unlocked to any carrier phone for my Hubby's bday. We have AT&T service. Do we just take the chip out of his old phone and put in the new one? Both have nano chip. Going from a Samsung Galaxy 8 edge to a Samsung Galaxy Note 10 plus. Do I need to call AT&T or go into store to switch over phone???
