We are here to help you upgrade the software on your Samsung S7 Edge, @Smithd12.
To update the software:
If you are unable to install the new software, you may visit our Troubleshooting tool for step-by-step help.
Please note that the software listed on our website are available for AT&T branded devices. If you do not have an AT&T branded device, please contact the original carrier or manufacturer for additional support.
We hope this information helps. Please let us know if you have any other questions.

Thank you for the response, @Smithd12.
We do not have an alternative to provide you with. The steps above is how you would update your device and check for the recent software available.
Can you please confirm if your device is an AT&T branded device? If it is not, again we do recommend reaching out to the manufacturer for additional assistance.
We hope this helps. Please reach back out with any other concerns you may have.

@Smithd12
Are you in the US and actually using the phone on the AT&T network with an active AT&T SIM?
That's the only way you will get updates over the air from AT&T. They do not provide their firmware any other way.
And apk files have nothing to do with the OS. Those are only for installing apps, and that's it.
There are ways to get an updated firmware, but we can't discuss it on these forums as it can brick your phone if not done correctly and AT&T doesn't want to appear to condone that practice. All I can do is suggest googling about it, and maybe check out the xda developer forums or android central forums for help.
Good luck.

@Smithd12 You must be connected to AT&T network to receive updates. Since you said that you did not have a AT&T SIM you can not receive updates. You could try to find someone with AT&T service and borrow their SIM to update.
Excerpt from link below.
Network connections
Software updates are done over Wi-Fi®, so they don't affect your data use. Make sure you’re:

Well then, Google the things I suggested above to find another way. Or, get another non-AT&T phone and avoid such branded phones in the future. Call it a learning experience.

As I posted earlier you must be in the US and connected to AT&T. There are ways to update without being connected to AT&T but it can not discussed here due to posting rules. Google the procedure.
