International calling

Hi,  I’m planning on adding a passport pass for french travel.

if someone calls or texts me from France while Im touring, will the 10.00$ kick in?  Or will I get charged local rate?

if I do not buy any international plans,  will I still receive texts in France from USA and from France?

Re your Questions:

if someone calls or texts me from France while Im touring, will the 10.00$ kick in?  Or will I get charged local rate?

If you did not pay the international add-on cost of $35, you will have no service at all.  With the add-on you are paying for a week of service and 5 GB of data, talk and text.

if I do not buy any international plans,  will I still receive texts in France from USA and from France?

As above, if you do not buy the $35 International add-on you will have no service at all.

Since you posted in prepaid, you cannot add international day pass (postpaid only)

Your options to roam with AT&T prepaid are limited to the countries listed, and cost $35 per week.

We'll be happy to help you stay connected during your holiday @Frischklopper.

We agree with everything @formerlyknownas told you above. Just to add some additional context, you can add the Prepaid International Add-On as long as you have a HD-voice capable device, a plan that's at least $25 a month, and enough funds in your account balance to buy the add-on. We'd suggest buying the add-on the day you arrive, as your 7-day window starts as soon as you add it to your account.

You can add this to your account by replying to the text you get from us when you reach your destination or by signing in to myPREPAID and using Wi-Fi to make your first purchase.

  1. Go to your myPREPAID.
  2. Select Add-Ons.
  3. Scroll down to International Travel Add-On and follow the prompts.

Please let us know if you have any additional questions; if so, we'll be happy to assist further. Thank you for reaching out to our AT&T Community.

Do I need to turn off data roaming?  Or will I NOT be able to access stuff.

also,  will the folks in France be charged for calling my number in France?

You will need to turn data roaming on to use data. You can still text and call with data roaming off. Whether or not folks in France are charged when calling you will depend on their carrier. They could be charged international long distance since they are calling a US number even if that number happens to be in France but that will depend on their carrier.

When do I turn data roaming on?  For websites?

Anytime you want to use data. That could be websites, checking email or any app that accesses the internet if you aren’t on WiFi.

@Frischklopper, that is a great question.

As stated by @sandblaster, you will need to turn data roaming on to use data which to include websites.

Getting helpful tips to stay within your AT&T Prepaid data allowance is awareness of what uses the most data:

  • High-definition video streaming (about 900MB per hour)
  • Video conferencing with apps like FaceTime® and Skype® (about 480MB per hour)
  • Standard-definition video streaming (about 240MB per hour)
  • Online interactive gaming (about 60MB per hour)
  • Streaming music (about 30MB per hour)
  • Downloading movies and other large data files

Use less plan data
Join a Wi-Fi network whenever you can

Connecting devices to Wi-Fi® networks is a great way to use less wireless data. If there aren’t any Wi-Fi networks available, your device automatically switches back to wireless data.

Heads up: Some apps on your device use wireless data even when connected to a Wi-Fi network.
