Difference in plans and billing date

I am a little confused about the plans. 

$50 Monthly Plan

($40 with AutoPay)

Data for Smartphone: Includes 8 GB of high-speed data. Data usage exceeding the 8 GB high-speed allowance will result in reduced data speeds of up to 128 Kbps for the rest of your 30-day term. If you have a capable smartphone, you can use it as a Wi-Fi hotspot to share your data with other devices.

Data for Basic Phone: Includes 8 GB of data at speeds up to 3G. Data usage exceeding the 8 GB of data at 3G will result in reduced data speeds of up to 128 Kbps for the rest of your 30-day term. Actual speeds vary by device capability and location. See att.com/broadbandinfo for details. Data Add-Ons with speeds of up to 3G are available for an additional charge.

But the $40 Monthly Plan says

Can someone explain which one would be better?  And if I switch to the $40 Monthly plan is there a Auto Pay discount?

Also, how do I know what day my billing date is? I want to change plans but I know it needs to happen before they autodraft.

The $40 plan is the $50 plan with a $10 autopay discount. There is no separate $40 plan or any 15GB plan, not sure where you are seeing that. There is some indication ATT may be replacing the current 8GB plan with a 15GB plan. If so, that it is basically the same plan, just more data but to my knowledge, not available yet. As for your billing date, prepaid does not have a bill and renew dates are not static because plans are 30 days long, so the renew date changes in any month not exactly 30 days. You would need to login to your account to check the renew date.

@sandblaster I appreciate your help. I found the information under my data plans on my account. Its all so confusing. And on my account where does it show the renew date? Forgive me for being so dense about this.

There is usually a renew date at the billing/monthly plan aspect of the page. If you did not find it, then you can count 30 days from your last renewal date to estimate when your next renewal will be.
