AT&T customer with PrePaid $2 daily plan needing data access for US visit

We are long time AT&T customers and used to have a monthly plan while living in the US. When we moved to Uruguay in 2009, we switched to pre-paid plans so we could use the same cell numbers for visits to the US - approximately three trips a year for about two weeks each. We have faithfully added the minimum amount to the balance every 90 days in order to not lose our balance nor our numbers. This runs about $100 per year per line (for 2 lines).

Now that I have a smartphone, I'm wondering about adding a short duration data plan for these visits. I would need a microSIM with my current number but I'm assuming I can get that at a local AT&T store when we arrive.

I know I can add 100 MB of data on a daily basis for $1. Can this be renewed during the day or am I limited to 100 MB per day no matter how much money I'm willing to spend?

I also see some monthly plans without auto renewal that might work. Plan: Buy one that is good for 30 days for each trip.

Questions on the 30 day plan:
Do I get to keep the same number even if I don't buy another 30 day plan for several months?
Can I use the huge balance in my current plan (nearly $500) to pay for the 30 day plan each time?
Will I lose that huge balance if I don't keep putting money in every 90 days (as is the case now)?

Thank you for your assistance!

There is no limit. When you use up the 100 MB, you can buy another 100 MB.

Yes, you keep your number. You can change to any plan you want. You can change to a 30 day plan while your in the US and change back to the $2 plan when you leave.

Your balance is used to pay for whatever plan you have. If you change to a 30 day plan, your balance will pay for it. Keep track of your balance expiration date. You only lose your balance if you go past the expiration date.
