Annual plan double data promo for existing customers

I see AT&T is offering double data on its $300 annual plan: 16gb a month instead of the usual 8gb.

Will customers already on the annual plan start getting the extra data too?

If not, can they switch to it at renewal somehow?

Yes. He purchased the AT&T 16GB plan online for a new phone line.

@Rustproof

This plan is advertised deceptively as 16, when it's 8+8

Doesnt seen to matter as it rolls over the unused data.

Bonus is used first.  Then base.

That’s illegal as far as I’m concerned. So you’re saying if you use 8 month one, you only get 8 month two because there’s no roll over left? You never got or had 16.

That is literally not what I just wrote.  While  I do think the advertisement is deceptive and it confuses people who are expecting to see 16 gb, you are indeed provided with 16 GB, any or all of which roll over to the following month if unused

Bonus data is used first, then 8 gig plan data.

If you use 1 GB of data, you have 15 GB roll over to the following month.

Sorry it was unclear, so you’re saying it just doesn’t report having 16 when in fact you do including roll over 16+16 in month two.

I've tried several attempts with customer service, but they said that because he activated and used the phone data, there was nothing they could do to get him switched from 8Gb to the 16Gb/month plan. Because he is in a rural area, he ends up rationing time on Facebook. I recently found out he has been spending $20 per 1Gb of data for increases on his previous data plan.

To recap: I have the 16Gb promotion that shows double data (16Gb). When purchasing the 16Gb plan online for my Dad, he only received the 8Gb/month. AT&T gave us a 1-time courtesy refund for canceling the yearly plan. I have no idea on why he didn't get 16/Gb and even the reps were unsure. I was told a few reasons, but they are contradictory.

@Rustproof I guess it’s too late if you’ve already cancelled the plan and gotten a refund but you could have escalated to corporate by filing an FCC or BBB complaint.

Formeryknownas is saying you will get an additional 8 after you use the first 8. Should be relatively safe to try as I believe prepaid only slows data speed after using all data vs charging you extra per gig. Plus even $300 for 8 is a lot better than anyone else can get (5gb for $30 or $360+fees per year). What was the total charge? A lot of fees must be eliminated too now that I think about it. The 5gb charges $3.45 fees/mon so over $400/year for 5gb.

Regarding rollover, one thing that may confuse people is the way it works. Here's an example:

Month 1 - Allocated 16 GB, Use 6 GB, Rollover = 10 GB

Month 2 - Allocated 16 GB, Use 17 GB, Rollover = 0 GB

The 10 GB that rolls over from Month 1 only survives one month and gets consumed after Month 2's 16 GB allotment. It definitely could be a more generous policy. Then again, virtually no other prepaid plan does rollover in any shape or form, so it's better than nothing.

Regarding buying the 16 GB deal and only getting 8 GB, I ran into this while helping someone switch to this plan from an AT&T MVNO. They signed up for the promotional offer but didn't request number porting during the sign-up flow (mostly because they wanted to apply some prepaid refill cards to the plan rather than paying by credit card). They requested porting a couple of days later. This caused a lot of internal confusion, and she wound up getting assigned to the 8 GB plan. It took a bit of effort with the phone reps. They were polite and professional, but initially, they said there was nothing they could do. Eventually though, they escalated the matter to their support teams and got her on the 16 GB plan.

It looks like I’m getting automatically switched from the 8GB plan to 16GB! Woo hoo!  AT&T has pulled through for their current customer!

Check your online account for a message. Mine says it will be 16BG next time the plan renews - in the next few days.

Here’s what it says:

Good News - You now have double data

Your 12-Month Plan will now have double the data -- 16 GB of high-speed plan data included each month. You don't need to do a thing, your plan's included data will increase automatically at your next monthly plan renewal. Enjoy more games, movies, sports or whatever your passion is -- you deserve it! We appreciate you being an AT&T Prepaid customer.
