The same way you port any phone number between service providers:
1. Service must still be active with the original provider. Inactive numbers cannot be ported. Therefore you must still be paying for service, not suspended, and not deactivated.
2. You must have the account number from your original provider
3. You must also have the security pin code or Port pin. Each carrier is different you must ask your current carrier whether you need a port pin or you can use your security PIN code. If you do not know your security pin code follow your current carriers procedure to reset your pin code.
4. Provide the information on the phone number, the account number, and the security or Port pin to your carrier of choice, they do the rest.

It depends on how you're doing the port. If you go to a physical store your number can usually ported in 1 hour or less.
My number is very important to me, and I have very little Trust 😂 so I always do my port in a physical store.
If you're signing up for a deal that requires an online port, just be extremely careful, read everything, and make sure that you're service stays active until your Port is successful
If you do it online your number may not be ported until after you have active service, you would be assigned to temporary number, a call to the port activation center with your information may be required.

Thank you @formerlyknownas for your efficient and accurate information!
As our ACE stated, going to the store in person would be the quickest way to get your number ported over. This usually results in the number being completely ported within 1-3 business hours. By phone, number transfers can take 3-5 business days.
