Was advised to not upgrade

I brought my iPhone 12 into an ATT store and was advised by an employee that most of the time you keep the phones when we try to upgrade and still make us pay for the remaining balance and pay for our new phone he said my best bet just to be safe is to keep my phone and just continue making monthly payments on it and that is what I did I kept my phone so I did not get ripped off. And now you are charging me the full remaining balance and threatening to suspend my service as a disabled single mother who is paid her bill on time every single month this is absolutely ridiculous you tricked me and I have a feeling there’s going to be a (Edited per community guidelines) pretty soon because I’m hearing so many terrible things about the way you run your business. There’s absolutely no reason why I cannot just continue making monthly payments on my remaining $300 I owed on my iPhone 12 so this is a great way to reward a customer that has paid on time not only her phone but her children’s phone and tablet so thank you very much for this amazing reward of suspending my service because I suddenly cannot afford to pay 300 something dollars on top of my $300 bill as a single parent right when rent is due. You should be completely ashamed of yourself the way you harm your customers this is not the treatment I would expect for somebody who has paid on time every month and very good customer I would hate to see how you treat people who struggle especially right now during a cost-of-living crisis how dare you  get your employees all on the same board so they don’t tell people to keep their phones and they get charge for them upfront (Edited per community guidelines) everyone has different answers and it’s not acceptable and I don’t care at this point if you spend my (Edited per community guidelines)ing service

Authorized AT&T Retail Store or an actual AT&T Corporate Store? That can make a BIG difference in what you are told. They look exactly the same but the Retail Store is independently owned and operated separate from AT&T, and are not staffed by AT&T employees.

The only reason you would be billed the remainder owed on the phone was if you did upgrade and needed to pay off the phone in order to put the new phone on an installment plan or if you cancelled your line. Since you didn’t upgrade, that would suggest you cancelled the line unless the store employee did something fraudulent and put a new phone installment plan on your account. The only reason your service would be suspended is for not paying a bill. You don’t provide enough info to determine what actually happened, though.

Yeah I don't know what's missing from the story but there's definitely something missing here.

If you look at prior bills there might be some explanation as to what's going on. The iPhone 12 had to be connected to a phone line whether it's your phone line or someone else's phone line in order to be on installments. If that phone line was upgraded, which means you bought a new phone on a new installment agreement, then the remaining installments on the iPhone 12 had to be paid off.

The same would happen if you canceled the phone line that was connected to the iPhone 12. Anytime you cancel a line with existing installments the remaining installments are doing full on the next bill.
