Switch device before payments are finished?

I’m considering buying an iPhone 12 Pro and just paying for it in full. Through AT&T, I still have payments owed on my iPhone XS.

Am I able to switch out my phone and continue to pay the monthly payments due for my iPhone XS (even though I will be using the 12), or do I have to pay the remainder first, before I can change out my device?

(Note I am not upgrading the device through AT&T, just purchasing it separately.)

You do not need to pay off the XS first. You can switch to any phone you want and continue making payments on the XS. There is no requirement you actually use the phone you are paying for. How much do you owe on the XS? If less than $800, you may be better off economically paying it off and taking advantage of the $800 trade in offer.

Excellent, thank you! I'm able to use my ridiculous stock pile of credit cards points as well as a 5% discount if I purchase through them, so I can get it for about half price. (And I don’t want to trade in, as I want to give my current phone to my husband.)
