Phones just came in
My family ordered 5 new phones, 4 of them are supposed to be purple, and one black, unfortunately all 5 came in as purple. Is it possible to just return the purple one for a black one and not have to send all the phones back?

Yes.
Here's the thing, you don't know which one of the purple phones has to go back. Unless they all came with numbers assigned. (Even then...?)
And you can't be sure which phone is connected to which installment on which phone line.
It may seem trivial, but each installment is connected to a particular IMEI and a particular phone line. And if you do insurance that's another thing that has to be matched up properly.
I would suggest going to a corporate store to straighten it all out. In fact I would have suggested you do business at a corporate store even though it's a time consuming nuisance, every single time so that this is done correctly without any cross upgrades
