Need a New Number - Previous Owner Had a Gambling Problem
Hello!
At the beginning of the year, I upgraded and subsequently got a new phone number. I didn’t think it would be a problem at all... Unfortunately, I was very wrong... the previous owner of my new phone number subscribed to receive SMS messaging ads from tons and tons of companies. On top of that, I found out that the previous owner of my current phone number has a serious gambling problem.
I receive multiple calls/texts daily from bookies, acquaintances who have the same hobby and people demanding their money. I can’t even count how many times i’ve Unsubscribed and/or blocked numbers.
For a little while, that seemed to have worked and I’d only get a few calls/texts per day. It didn’t last long though, and it’s recently been worse than ever. March Madness was bad and I presume football season will be worse.
I was told by a customer service rep on the phone that I could get the $36 fee waived if I went to an AT&T store. My vehicle got totaled so I am without transportation at the moment. It’s already been such an inconvenience that I would really appreciate if I didn’t have to do that.
Is it possible to get this resolved online or over the phone?
Thank you!

If you are prepaid, just wait till your balance is $0 and end of 30 days, get a new sim and start fresh.
If you are postpaid, you can change your number online, or any of the other ways you mention. You can ask, but I don’t know that the fee is avoidable.

@BrielleRichey I don't know any policy where they waive number change fees in store but not over the phone. That rep told you to go to the store to get rid of you, and I bet they'd still charge you $36 in the store. You think $36 is too high a price to pay to stop all this harassment?
