Free trade in lies

I called in to see about the free trade in. Used my s21 for the s22. I asked rep about it being unlocked and if there was a contract with it. Rep told me no contract and it will be unlocked with even 22 dollars of extra credit. It will take 2-3 months to take effect. Here at is 4 months later calling in because Bill is higher and showing over 700 dollars due for phone. Payment 33 of 36 due of 23 dollars a month.  Apparently phone is in contract AND it's not unlocked . What would you do? Supervisor said basically I'm stuck until 36 months before being unlocked. Phone is free after the 36 months. Each month they apply monthly credit. What the actual (Edited per community guidelines)!? WHAT CAN I DO FOR THEM TO HONOR IT?  They said they will reprimand the associate?  I lost an unlocked phone to them to get me in contract.

Unlocked ?   If you haven't been told this before, AT&T phones are locked until they are paid off. There is no exception unless you are military or government worker and are deployed outside of the coverage area.

The trade-in deal does allow you to pay off and unlock your phone once credits start without losing the credits. This is specific to this particular deal do not assume that any other type of deal from any other carrier works the same way (Verizon does not).  Once the phone is paid off, which will be the full amount, not a reduced amount, then you can unlock the phone.

I bought the s21 straight from Samsung and it was only a few months old. That's when att advertised a free trade in. Associate said no catches, and no contract . My husband travels over seas that's why I asked if phone will be unlocked and he said yes. I wouldn't of did trade in if I knew about all this. Tricked into a contract . They need to honor what was said. They can listen to phone conversation. That's a bunch of crap with lies. I'm so done with att after this.

Hello @Bit2moody, let's shed some more light on your trade-in.

AT&T does not have any contracts we do what is called an installments on all our postpaid account who qualify for a newer device. The monthly installment is included with your bill each month. The only other option is to pay the phone off in full.

You are not under contract, there is no ETF. ATT quit doing contracts over 4 years ago. Customers who buy phones on payment plans are not on contracts either. Their only obligation is to pay off the phone. You can read about it here in our support article for installment plans.

You can check to see if your device is lock using the AT&T device unlock.

How is it a free trade in if I have to pay off 700 dollars as Bill states? 33 months left to pay. Supervisor said it's a contract of 36 months. And it will be unlocked after those 36 months.

Because if you do it the way I said you still get $700 in credits.

You get a charge and a credit over 36 months each month. Therefore it is free.

36 months is a contract, cant to no upgrade,  and if i do I have to pay off phone, how is that free. and its not unlocked... associate stated wrong info to Me. At no time did he mention of the 36 months term. I checked all my boxes before I agreed trade in.  They need to honor what was told to me over the phone. They can pull that call and listen.

AT&T has every right to hold you to it.  You don't get special treatment just because you now claim that someone lied to you, not after signing the agreement.  You should always read the deals and what you sign

They need to see what their associates are telling people.  And honor what they are telling the customer.

They will only honor what’s on the official website. Not anything you claim they told you. Calls are random 4% are recorded and even if your conversation was recorded only the AT&T corporate legal team has access to them so no one will or is able to listen to your conversation
