Don’t buy from Sam’s Clubs

Walked into a Sam’s club and sales rep asked what I paid for cell service, I said just under 200 for 4 phones. He said, what if I can get you 4 new iPhone 11 Pro’s for free and cut your bill to 160 by switching over to Att&t. I said what’s the catch, he says just port over your lines and trade in your current phones and you’ll get the new phones for free credited to your account. He said the  first two bills will be high and the third and fourth would be zero once the credits kick in. So I told him I could only switch 3 over and kept 1 line with Verizon. So we got the port pins from Verizon and switched 3 lines. I had to put over 200 bucks down at the store for the phones. He said to ship the trade ins back in the box our new phones come in with the provided label within 2 weeks. We did that, sent all 3 iPhone trades to att. First bill comes over 400 bucks, second almost 300, third still 300, no credits for porting the lines from Verizon and no trade credit. One rep said they don’t kn ow where the phones are , one said damaged, but I never received anything about the phones once they got sent off. 2 weeks after I received my new phones I get an email saying here’s your tracking label information to print to send in trades , we already sent them back with the provided labels in the new phone box like we were told. I think the trades went to the place our new phones came from, regardless att has them and they had return address’s  on them to send back if that was a problem so we can send to the right place. We called and told att about this and they said don’t worry they have the phones and would send them to the right place. Att&t Rep on the phone tells us Sam’s club reps don’t work at att and lie, there was never a promotion to switch to Att&t from Verizon and our 3 iPhones are worth 55 bucks and that there is no port credits for switching. Makes sense for me to switch from 4 lines at 198 Verizon to 3 for 288 at att and give you my perfectly working phones for nothing. Also the gift card I was supposed to get I didn’t , and the discount for my place of employment 20 percent I’m still waiting on. What a headache, never trust the people in the Sam’s clubs.

Yes, the fault lies with AT&T. They are well aware of what is happening with these 3rd party contractors that are selling hardware and services under false pretenses.

This is the same as with the Trade-In program where AT&T knows that Hyla is devaluing devices sent-in to them so that Hyla pays less to AT&T on their contract and AT&T pays less in promotions to customers.

Unethical? Most certainly. Illegal? Yes, I think so. I believe it is a conspiracy (not lizard people and JFK - but the legal definition) between AT&T and their third party contractors to milk as much revenue from the customers as possible.

I had a similar issue where I was told I'd have 5 lines unlimited for $100 + Tax, I just got my first bill and it's for $455 including taxes of $63 +, They added in some per line "Next Up" $10 monthly cost, I brought my own phones and they still hit me with a monthly hardware cost per phone, then said my base monthly charge was $185 + tax. The sales guys are spinning all kinds of lies to make clients switch. They also charged $67 for SIM Cards, and a $30 per line activation fee. They said those fees would be credited back by SAMS Club but no info on getting those credits. This is a ginormous scam to. DO NOT Believe the Sales Men, insist on seeing your expected bill figures, and insist on the promotion details in writing.

Sam's Club is an Authorized Retailer. That means they are a 3rd party, not AT&T owned/operated. Too often 3rd parties will say anything to make a sale, or at best are not well informed/trained on the products and services.

Even with anything in writing, AT&T will only work with and honor what is on AT&T's own documentation (paperwork they send or their website). Any information that is on the paperwork by Sam's Club, but not AT&T's, will not be honored. Disputes are with the 3rd party.

This is why I suggest avoiding 3rd parties whenever possible and just deal with the company directly.

Yep, same with us. We already had at&t, but they did the Sam's club division is different and for reasons we'd have to change out numbers, which was annoying in that my husband and I had both had our numbers for like a decade or more and everything was attached to them, but since both were out of state numbers, switching to local numbers made sense. We were suppsed to both get free samsung s21s, the newest model last year, with trade-ins of our old phones. We were promised that they'd qualify, and then our bill would be half of what we pay.

As you can guess, the trade-ins were rejected,  so we basically gave away phones and now pay $20 a month for each new phone, and our bill was higher even without that. I would have picked a cheaper phone if I'd known! And to top it off I can't seem to log into my att account to pay or see my bills. Now that I see this is an endemic problem, I'm very angry.

@Starfishprod

Sellers in Sam's Club do not work for AT&T. Those are 3rd party sellers otherwise known as Authorized Retailers that rent/lease space in Sam's Club. Too often they will say anything to make a sale or are not well trained on the products and services

Complaining to the seller's management is the 1st attempt. Beyond that consider a BBB complaint.

I had almost the same problem with AT&T at Sam's Club, Woodbridge, Virginia location, in September of last year. I was told & handed a broachers that I would have an AT&T Unlimited Elit plan for $140/month for a family of 4-phones plan.

However, I discovered that that was a flat lie. Actually, I paying $240 instead.

My question is, who do we need to contact to complain these issues so these predators won't rip others?

I tell everyone I know not to deal with AT&T. I have posted before how horrible our experience was and after 6 months the same. Thought it was straightened out after contacting Sam’s and for a few months the bill was less. Now this past month it was up again. Have tried the number that I had before to get it fixed again but no one returns my calls. Just counting the months until I can switch companies. Just wish I had seen reviews before I got sucked into this mess. Trixi Who was at the booth at Sam’s seemed so honest but she wasn’t. Everything she told us was a lie. I would hate to have that on my conscience. Luckily I would never do that to anyone. She will pay for it one day. You don’t do others like this without consequences.

Unc1team,

It may be that "Trixi" was being completely honest with you. She may have believed everything that she told you. Maybe that's what she was told that the promotion said.

It's a lack of training and knowledge that causes these issues.

AT&T loves these 3rd party reps because the salespeople can promise anything they want (honestly or dishonestly) to and when the customer finds out that the promises made were not actually AT&T terms - AT&T can simply say that these people are not AT&T employees and you should speak with the people that were "not accurate".

Meanwhile, you are stuck in the contract you signed that has the REAL terms in it.

It comes down to being able to say, "I believe you 100%, please put that in writing for me or show me the language in the contract referring to that specific point. Thank you."

Same story here. Sam's rep. LIED to us. Said we will payed 120 including taxes gor 4 lines, plus will get 4 FREE PHONES GALAXY ULTRA. ONLY thing we have to do is port our lines from our current carrier. THANKS GOD, we received the Wrong phones. So we had to Called Att. They explained us they have no plans for 120 for 4 lines. The cheapest plan they have was 160 for 4 lines PLUS TAXES, SO almost $200... But fortunately we were in the 14 day grace period, so we could sent the new "FREE" phones back to them and of course because we received the wrong phones, we didn't sent them our currents phones. And we didn't pay anything to Att and also they refunded us the money we payed at the stores for the sales taxes of the new phones. So if you switched to AT&T, you have 14 DAYS to CANCEL EVERYTHING, send them back the phones and get FULL REFUND. GOOD LUCK.
