LTE Poor Service iPhone iOS 15.1 Can't turn off LTE anymore

Since getting my phone (iPhone XR) almost 2 years ago I have had poor service when my LTE is on.  Zip Code 04005 (Maine). With LTE OFF, have full service (4 bars). When LTE is on, my service drops to 1... maybe 2 bars. Up until recently, when I updated to iOS 15.1, I was able to turn off the LTE and had great service with 4G throughout most of the state (Maine). After updating there is no longer an option to turn off LTE under Cellular-> Cellular Data Options, so my service has been horrible. Spent almost an hour on the phone between AT&T and Apple to come to the conclusion that it is most likely the carrier package that changed the ability to turn off LTE. My husband has not updated to 15.1 yet, so he still has full service as he can keep the LTE off. Resetting network options through the troubleshooting on the AT&T site will fix it temporarily and sap it to 4G, but after a half hour or so it will switch it back to LTE. Recently traveled to a small coastal town to visit family and had almost full service (04650).... which is odd because I live in the more urban part of Maine and they live in a more rural coastal town.

Is this going to be a permanent thing, or will this smooth out once the old 3G network gets shut down... or do I need to update to a 5G phone? Will my service be better?

When your iPhone shows 4G, that is actually ATT’s 3G network, so even if the ability to turn LTE off were restored, it would only be temporary since the 3G network will be totally shut down by the end of February. Whether or not LTE coverage in your area gets better, no one here can say. Perhaps a 5G phone is in order or perhaps switching to a different carrier is the solution.

Service below LTE is being shutdown (to be completed by Feb 2022). Your phone must support AT&T's specific Voice over LTE (VoLTE) going forward.

With poor LTE coverage in your area, I would do some comparing as you may need to switch providers for better coverage. Though their 5G coverage is still getting rolled out and improved.

Go to an AT&T Corporate Store (not an AT&T Retail Store, you may have to ask) and ask if they will install a new SIM. All 4 of our iPhones lost Voice & Data under Cellular Data Options so there were no choices available to us on an iPhone 7, 8 Plus, XR, and 12. Reset Network Settings fixed the iPhone 8 Plus, but we needed to install new SIM in the XR, 7, and 12 before Voice & Data returned. We also lost WiFi Calling but that was restored with a new SIM. AT&T is having sporadic issues with WiFi-C, Cellular Data, and SMS.
