Refund No Service

I rarely use my phone. I pay $100/yr and roll it over. I have close to a $250 balance. I just moved here. The service is very bad and sporadic. I went for a week without any service at home and once drove 20 miles one way then back stopping often but still couldn't get service. I am elderly and was very upset because I was trying to reach my doctor at my old location. I asked about WiFi Calling but was told that AT&T will not provide that with a GoPhone. So I want to cancel my service and have my balance refunded. The person I spoke to on the phone, (I got his ID #) refused. Does anyone know how to get a refund? I think this is criminal and plan to contact the AG and state agency for the elderly if AT&T does not refund my money promptly or let me use WiFi calling. If they can't provide service, they have no right to keep my money.

Prepaid service does not provide refunds.

For that matter, neither does postpaid.

You can holler to anyone that will listen, but that isn't how any prepaid service works.  No refunds are provided.  It's in the terms of service for ALL prepaid carriers.

How can a company legally refused to give a refund when they can't provide service?

No carrier guarantees service at any specific location and it is not ATT's fault you moved to a location where their service is not good. It is also not ATT's fault you have such a high balance on your account. Most customers only put enough to cover the month. Since you do have such a high balance, maybe they'll make an exception for you. I suggest you send a private message to @ATTMobilityCare.

@sandblaster  I don't know why the $100 for one year rolls over.

The information in the terms of service indicate the $100 lasts one year or until the balance reaches $0, which ever comes first.   I don't know how anyone would have a balance over $100

That seems to be part of the problem. The rules either change or there are different rules and plans that you only discover if you stumble on them or maybe search hard or speak with someone who knows about them. That’s how I learned about the $100/yr prepay that rolls over. I’ve had it 3 years I think, and the friend who told me about it has had it longer.

All customers are provided with the terms of service for their plan when they sign up.

The majority don't read it.

Be aware these policies are industry wide.  Your Next carrier will be the same.

My problem will not be the same because I won’t have a cell phone since it is stupid to pay for service when it isn’t available. And this is not “my problem”. It is an AT&T problem. They claim to offer good service in a wide area where the service is actually unreliable and sporadic. I believe that is false advertising and illegal.

I recently received a check in the mail for $0.16. Yes. 16 cents. It was my share in a class action suit against AT&T. The purpose of class action suits isn’t to recover money for individuals. It is to ensure that companies, especially in an industry with a monopoly, treat customers fairly and that they comply with the law. I hope and suspect that applying with the law also applies to terms of service.

Just curious, how old is your phone? Since you say ATT claims to have good coverage there, the poor coverage you have in your new location could be due to the phone, especially if it is several years old. Just something to consider. Do other ATT customers have similar coverage issues?

No carrier can or will guarantee service.   Even by your incorrect idea of service, once you moved out of ATT service area, they are no longer responsible to provide service.   It is not ATT's fault you moved where they don't provide service.

They have coverage maps online which can show where service is limited.  Did you consult these maps before you added money to your account or moved into the area?

My phone is about 3 years old. It is an iPhone 5c that I bought, paid in full, from AT&T. I rarely use it and when I do it is only to make long distance calls or to take pictures, maybe 2 dozen in 3 years. At other times the power is turned off. I basically got it to carry in the car in case of an emergency.

I don’t know many people here but all those I do know report a serious lack of cell phone coverage, not just AT&T. When I looked on the internet, I found people saying that the lack of coverage is the biggest complaint from tourists. I also found that the nearest AT&T retailer is 50 miles away in another state. To me the scarcity of retailers suggests that there aren’t many people looking for AT&T plans here because the coverage is bad.
