How can I get a refund on an AT&T prepaid card?

Ok, I purchased an AT&T prepaid card to use and instead went ahead and did the "real deal" and got AT&T wireless service. Now I tried to take the card back to Walmart with the receipt and showed them I hadn't even scratched the back of the card to reveal the code. They informed me that only AT&T can give me a refund.

So I called the number on the back of the card (800) 352-4071 and since I did not have a pre-paid number, nor did I need to set one up, it would disconnect me.

So I found online a pre-paid customer number (800) 901-9878 and again, since I did not have a pre-paid number, it would disconnect me.

I did try with both numbers to press 0 (hoping to get a real customer service person), but again, got the "hang-up" response.

Now I tried calling AT&T, from their Home line department to their Wireless department and no one can help me other than a "Pre-Paid Customer Service Person", but I cannot get past the "Automated Customer Computer Person".

So, I reaching out on the forums to try and find out how to get either the $50 I paid for this AT&T Prepaid Card (it's not a debit/gift card) in a check format or use it as a bill credit on my Wireless Plan.

Thanking you in advance

Sorry, prepaid does not refund and there is no way I know of to apply that to your wireless plan.

Hi Sandblaster - Wow, that news is very sad indeed. As time goes by I am sure another service provider who acts in a fair and courteous manner will get my business. At this time they are the only one that works where I live. But I will keep my eyes open for a new and reliable wireless provider. Thank you.

Hi Formerlyknownas - I will indeed find a stranger to help and give this card to. I prefer to give $50 to someone in need versus AT&T. That was a great suggestion. Thank you!!

Hello AT&THelp,

Did you really say that "what Lilmountainlady stated was true"?? Ummm....I could have sworn it was Sandblaster and not me.

That's sad.

why is the credit given in a prepaid card instead of a check? one needs to sign up for a card and go through verification process and enter pin instead of a straightforward and efficient refund by check.

@helpwithforum

That is an excellent question.

It is a ridiculous way of refunding money because if the card is stolen or lost nobody legitimate has the money.

In my opinion (which AT&T ignores)  refunds should be made by check. Until the check is cashed AT&T has the money. After you cash the check, you have the money.

But instead AT&T is giving the money to a third party who produces the prepaid debit card and then mails it to you. If the debit card never gets mailed then that third party company is keeping the money. If they do mail the card and it gets lost in the mail then no one gets the money. If someone steals the mail and uses the card then they have the money.

It's terrible, and AT&T should stop

True.  Making customers wade through how to use the unnecessary card with extra time.  Personal data was transferred to an unrelated party for the card because it has your name on it and you have your zip code to confirm at a minimum before you can use it.  The verification online did not work, so then you had to call, so the third party probably captured your phone number too.  It's like you go to a store to buy something, later ask for a refund and they give you a third party card instead. I did not authorize a third party form of refund, pls return credit in the original form of payment. The magnetic swipe on the card also does not work well, has to swipe 2-3 times at each merchant before it works. One cashier took the liberty to swipe the card after 3 unsuccessful attempts, defeating the purpose of contactless shopping as we're still in the pandemic.
