Landline home phone plan CANNOT be changed--avoid this ATT trap

For about six weeks now, I have been unable to change my landline phone plan. When I log in to my account, and click on all the right places, including "View My Plan" or "Change My Plan" for landline phone, it automatically goes to a page featuring wireless phones and options. Think it's cookies on my computer? No--it works the same way on my non-ATT cell phone, a desktop I tried that is not mine, and a laptop. The reason might be that I live in a rural area where a landline costs almost $100/month with almost no features. This is because cell phone connection is poor here. I've tried to call the appropriate number on ATT a total of TEN times. Five of those I was eventually disconnected. Three I was disconnected by ATT. The other two I was directed to waiting for the wireless sales line.

I know big companies are busy, but this is truly some of the worst customer service I have ever heard of in my life--from someone who pays almost $275/month for a landline and DirectTV.

There are no changes available on traditional landline phones I am aware of.

There are/was (3) plans for Uverse VOIP that was renamed ATT Phone in December 2016.

But you need to have ATT hardwired internet service with a gateway, the VOIP service is provided by the gateway not the landlone.

And about $100 per month sounds about right for a POTS service.

To have options would need to cancel the POTS line and either move to cell tower service or VOIP service using home internet.

When I got the landline there were 3 plans. We can’t use wifi - nothing is available here but HughesNet & it’s weak. I had this same plan in a big city 3 years ago & it was $45. Rural people are given higher prices. Also why doesn’t the website say there are no other plans available instead of trying to sell something else?

I called on 5/13, repair was supposed to be Tues. 5/17. No word, so I called again. on Thurs. 5/19. They weren't able to do the repair on 5/17, they said, but the "good news" was that the problem was not on my inside home line but somewhere at a "joint box" (I think they said) or some other remote place. So it was scheduled for repair then. I asked on that call for someone to call me on the home phone when it was fixed, or call on my cell phone (which they have, and it's not blocked). No word today, 5/24. The phone rang once this week from my own area code but I couldn't tell who it was and could not hear anyone. I can dial out, but cannot hear the person on the other end. So this problem continues. I supposed I will call ATT again to remind them to fix it.

For the 4th time? I guess I will, but I've already called that same number all these times and reported the same exact problem. How many times does it take?

Make sure they know you're calling about a traditional landline. I'm assuming you've tested this from the NID with a known working corded phone. Try to stick to one issue, your service it out. Forget the plans and pricing until you get your line fixed.

Spoom2, I've let them know it's a traditional landline in each call and have tested it that way. I haven't been asking them about the prices or plans. I'm just trying to get the repair done or notified somehow. I called 800-288-2020 again today: my ticket from 5/17 is "still open." The customer service rep said the repair ticket is "quite old" and apparently something is being reconfigured but she's not sure what. Since no estimated time frame is included, she decided to have a manager call the technician. I can't wait till we high-speed internet so I can get rid of this landline. I think the company has rural people on the "two tin cans and a string" system.

The good news is, that was my fifth post here so I've earned a "new badge." This is positively Orwellian.

I'd say it's past time to escalate to a customer care executive. You can do it by filling out the form, forget the header on the form.

A repairman came out today. It was quite a bit of work at some box in the area. It has worked now, and if the problem pops up again, I’ll need to call them and have them do something at the “central office” in this area. Must be a rural thing. This is proof that good wifi needs to be in all areas of the U.S.!

Well, there was another repair, and the box on the house itself was replaced. Now things seem to be better. The repairman said the box on the house had been there since the 1960s. Also, it looks like ATT gave me a credit on my phone bill. That is good, since it did not work properly for about 6 weeks.
