When will there be wi-fi calling for the Pixel 7/7 Pro?

I just purchased a Pixel 7 Pro, unlocked, where I live I am in a dead zone and reception is almost nil.  I rely on wi-fi calling to make any calls in my apartment that doesn't drop out every minute. How long will it take for these new devices to be approved?

Hi, holdmycall. While there is no estimated time of arrival when a newly released device that is unlocked (like your Google Pixel 7 Pro) will be able to use Wi-Fi Calling, there are several things to consider.

First, if you're in the U.S. and are unable to even use your phone over our cellular network to make and receive incoming and outgoing calls no matter where you go in your area, then chances are, your phone is not compatible to our network.

To be sure, we invite you to check whether your phone can be found among our list of approved unlocked devices.

When it comes to using an unlocked phone on AT&T's network, it may be incompatible due to the different hardware which is not optimized to work on AT&T’s network (HD Voice, VoLTE compatible). To use your unlocked phone over our network, it is up to the device manufacturer to submit the device for approval.

If calls can be completed over our network in different parts of your city, and your experience with using the cellular network is simply a case of bad reception in your area, then Wi-Fi Calling may already be available for your unlocked device.

There are several things to consider in order to ensure that your phone is capable of using the service.

  • Check your AT&T Wireless plan: Aside from a compatible AT&T Wireless phone or AT&T PREPAID phone with Wi-Fi turned on you will need an eligible plan. Your account will need to be set up for HD Voice.
  • Check for and download the latest software for your device: You can check with the original carrier or manufacturer for software updates as the updates on our Device Support Portal are only available for AT&T branded devices and may not work if you brought your own device to AT&T.
  • If you're outside the U.S. then make sure you're visiting a country where Wi-Fi Calling is available: You can’t use Wi-Fi Calling in China, Cuba, North Korea, India, Iran, Israel, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Syria, Turkey, United Arab Emirates, or Vietnam.

You can find these details and more when you visit Stay connected with Wi-Fi Calling. Also, check out the details under Finding you when you call 911. Your phone's ability to use Wi-Fi Calling may simply be a case of changing your location info.

Try this and let us know how it goes.

My reception is fine outside of my apartment, but in my apartment, it is a dead zone. Reception drops out every minute or so. They can't hear me and it comes back or it sometimes doesn't.   So, I need wi-fi calling in my apartment.

No estimated/usual timeframes for this device to be whitelisted?

Thank you for sharing those details, holdmycall! Let’s meet in a Direct Message (DM) to discuss your unlocked device's inability to use Wi-Fi Calling.

Please check your Direct Message Inbox for a message being sent to you. Look for the chat icon next to the bell icon in the upper right corner of the Forums page.

Also, since your device can make and receive calls over our network, make sure that you change your location info:

  1. Tap Settings on your phone, then tap Cellular (Apple devices) or Connection (Android devices).
  2. Check if Wi-Fi Calling's listed.
    • If it is, select Wi-Fi Calling.
    • If not, your phone isn’t compatible.
  3. Review important info and confirm your emergency 911 address.

What's more, please verify that Airplane Mode is turned off on your device. Otherwise, Wi-Fi Calling will not provision correctly with Airplane Mode turned on.

  1. From your Home screen, swipe up to display all apps.
  2. Navigate to Settings then Network & internet.
  3. Tap the Airplane mode switch to turn the setting off if it's on.

These details will be important as we work toward a resolution into your experience.

Remember to keep an eye on the DM. We want to look into why you're unable to use Wi-Fi Calling on your unlocked Google Pixel 7 Pro.

It is not on the approved devices yet, which is why I am asking when it will be approved and how long it normally takes.

Question for anyone who has a pixel 7 and uses bluetooth with wifi calling. When you accept a call, can you hear the person on the other end? I'm seeing loads of reports where this is a huge issue on T-Mobile.
