Voicemail not working (asks for voicemail box number)

I have a Motorola Stylus 5G phone that I got last August and I am trying to set up voicemail so I can have a recorded message when I miss a call and I can receive voicemails. When I try to call my voicemail, I am asked to either enter the number of the person I am trying to call, or, if I press pound (#), to enter the mailbox number for my device. I have tried both my phone number and a different number I found in my "Phone" app's settings, and neither works. How do I set up voicemail on my phone?

Did you have voicemail previously? If not voicemail is removed 60 after account setup. You will need to call to have voicemail added again and then go through the setup procedure. Link below on how to setup voicemail.

Hello FI_retire,

No, I do not think I attempted to use or setup voicemail within 60 days of account setup. Should I call AT&T telling them that? Thank you for your time.

We understand how important it is to have your voicemail set up, SamuelF.

Special thanks to our ACE, Fl_retire, for their great expertise.

Our first recommendation would be set up your voicemail with our device support module.

Just simply scroll all the way down the page until you get to "Voicemail" drop-down, then click "Set up voicemail".

Alternatively, you can set up voicemail by selecting and holding the 1 key from the Phone app. If prompted, enter your voicemail password, then follow the prompts to set up your voicemail. If you have forgotten your existing voicemail password, you will not be able to access voicemail until you reset your voicemail password.

Our second recommendation would be to trouble-shoot your voicemail, if you still are having issues.

Just click the gray, "Start" button to get started.

Your phone needs a wireless connection to receive calls, access voicemail, download Visual Voicemail messages, and get voicemail notification alerts. To check that your signal is strong enough for this:

  1. Turn your phone off for 10 seconds and then back on.
  2. Place a test call to 611.
  3. Do one of the following:
    • If the test call is successful, press and hold 1 to dial into the voicemail system.
    • If your test call fails, confirm you have wireless coverage.
    • If Visual Voicemail won't download, press and hold 1 to check your messages.
    • If you aren't getting voicemail notification alerts and you aren't traveling outside the AT&T wireless coverage area, see how to turn voicemail notification alerts on and off.

Please let us know if this helps, if not, we can cotinue offering you support. Thanks for reaching out to AT&T Community Forums!
