iPhone XS Max - Mail apps hangs - Timeout
I have iPhone XS Max and SE (first gen). Both on iOS 15.5. The SE was copied from XS Max, so all apps and settings should be the same. XS Max is the one I use so has a SIM card but SE just works on wifi. No SIM card.
On XS Max, the Mail app hangs when launched for almost a minute or so, before getting new emails and allowing me to browse the emails. Does not happen on SE.
Not using VPN or Private Relay on either.
If I launch Mail app within 30- sec or so, it will not hang. But in a few minutes it will.
Seems like it is timing out.
Both devices are on the same wifi network also.
How do I fix this?
Thanks in advance.

Let us help you with your Apple Mail app on your iPhone XS Max, @tinausa.
There are many possible reasons why your Apple Mail app is timing out. It can be due to server downtimes, incorrect settings, bad updates, and or software glitches. With that being said, let's start by trying some troubleshooting steps to help get your Apple Mail app up and running again.
Lets start by deleting the Mail app. From your settings go to General > iPhone Storage > Mail > tap Delete app. You may also want to remove your iCloud email and then re-add it. Go to Settings > Mail > Accounts > select the account you want to remove > then select Add account to re-add your email.
Since your iPhone XS Max is currently up to date, lets try resetting your network settings. From the home screen, select the Settings app > scroll to and select General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > select Reset > Reset Network Settings > select Reset Network Settings again to confirm.
Try these steps and let us know how this worked for you! You can also reach out to Apple Support for additional troubleshooting.
We look forward to your response as we do have other options we can try.

Did that, a painful process since I have multiple email accounts. And it did not work. When Mail app is launched, it hangs and takes over a minutes before I can tap on any of the accounts to see emails.

How many accounts? Are they all with the same email provider? Too many accounts is likely the reason for it hanging. You can try a different email app but otherwise, not much anyone here can do about Apple’s email app.

The email accounts are not with the same provider.
That has NOT been the reason for over ten years, why would it change now?

Sorry, I misread your first post, I thought you were saying it happened on both phones. How long have you had the XS? Has this hanging thing always occurred on the XS or is this new?

Started about three weeks ago.
Does not happen in any other app, just Mail.

So it used to work fine on the XS until 3 weeks ago? Does it hang regardless of whether you are on WiFi or cellular data?

Yes, it does - hangs both on just wifi, just cellular and both turned on.
Interestingly, the little badge indicating new mail does update on the Mail icon, but when launched it hangs.

Why would I need to update email app? It is Apple's Mail app. Should get updated along with all other iOS updates.
Still tried the link. It is dead. Just like everything AT&T. I am going to change to another carrier.

Changing carriers won’t fix this. Whatever is going on, it’s pretty clear it’s the phone, not the network. A last resort maybe, but you may need to erase all content and settings and set it up as a brand new phone. You should, of course, have a fresh backup before doing that. If you do go that route, I would suggest first adding your email accounts manually before restoring from the backup, in the chance there is some hidden or corrupt setting causing this.

You may be right. But I have a lot of concerns and issues with AT&T practices and policies that change without full notification and to their benefit. And this may be the last straw.
