data problems in Mexico
I'm temporarily in Mexico for a few months. I was excited that AT&T in Mexico is now included in my US unlimited plan, and I kept my service with AT&T because of this. However, I find I often have very slow or no cellular data, even when it says it's connected to AT&T's network and has five bars of connectivity. Is there something I can change in my settings to improve my data speed while in Mexico?

@Djhuntert425 is correct. Sometimes it's a matter of getting the right AT&T representative on the phone when you call who knows how to reprovision service so that you can use the network selector on your phone

I’ve been an AT&T Wireless customer for a few decades and am ready to jump ship, even if I have to trade in my relatively new iPhone. I moved homes in Chicago about a year ago and get 1-2 bars, thus rely on my wifi. But I changed from Xfinity to AT&T Fiber, which constantly cuts out. And now I’m in vacation in Mexico, and the data roaming speed is TERRIBLE. So hello Verizon Wireless and Xfinity internet, goodbye AT&T. I’m done with you.

I realize that data speeds in Mexico rely on the local wireless networks that my phone is using for roaming, yet my spouse’s Verizon iphone has much more reliable and faster data download speeds throughout the city. I’ve restarted my iphone several times thinking this might help, to no avail. At one point I had to use my spouses iphone hotspot to connect to the internet to use the city’s bike rideshare Ecobici, in the posh neighborhood of Polanco, despite having full bars.

Have you checked to see which network each phone is roaming on. You can manually select a different roaming network while you are outside of the USA

@rorysdad . I was in polanco about 2-3 months ago and had no issues . Again you just have to follow my instructions above. The problem with Verizon is you’re limited to 0.5gb a day of high speed data while in Mexico/Canada. Tmobile has a similar limit but rather 5gb for the entire month vs a daily amount like Verizon. AT&T is the only carrier with truly unlimited high speed data while in Mexico. You also might try doing a reset network settings. Another tip off topic is to turn off VOLTE in Mexico when doing so your call quality will improve drastically. Hope this helps.

Djhuntert425 & formerlyknownas, thanks very much for your advice. Manual Network Selection was not available in Settings, but I called AT&T Support and they were able to turn it on. Ironically, I was connected to AT&T’s network. And as mentioned, my spouse’s Verizon iphone had not problems. BUT now that I’ve changed to the TELCEL network, my speeds remain terrible. In contrast to what In direct contradiction to what former AT&T employee Constructive said (confidently, abruptly, AND incorrectly) my partner’s Verizon phone has great speeds on the TERCEL network.

After hours on the phone with AT&T and getting nowhere I switched providers. Spectrum uses Verizon's network for 70% less cost. I got *$29.99/month for 2 unlimited voice, text & data.
*you pay for int’l, but it works and is manageable.
I called AT&T to see if they had interest in getting me back as a customer. But the script they read didn’t allow them to do anything to get me back…
